Talk Nerdy To Me (MTG)

I have setup a game for late January.

See Here:
Quote:
It was a cold, dark, ominous night in late December when the idea struck him. An idea so crazy, so outlandish, that only a few strong men would be able to survive.
Allowing a month to train, he picked a day just as everyone was getting back into their mundane routines and rituals following a hectic holiday season.
That day will be, the soon to be infamous, 1/27/19. A day that will separate the boys from the men and the women from the toasters.
Everyone will arrive with their greatest EDH/Commander decks and face off in a no holds barred, pin falls count anywhere, no count outs, endurance match of greatness.
No combo wins, no proxy cards, no unglued, no unhinged, no unanything. Restricted and banned card rules will be followed. Only but one man will walk away victorious, but not unscathed. Beaten, broken, and busted, he'll stand above the ashes of his competition and exit the castle knowing he is the greatest commander to ever walk through the door to compete in that hellish tournament.

Are you that man?
I have a Sliver Commander deck that I've worked on for a couple of years before completing it exactly how I want it. Tonight, a friend came over who doesn't really like EDH (old school guy) and he threw together a quick vampire/creature destruction deck using Mogus. My deck was just poopoo the entire night. It generally does well, but tonight it was bad mana draw after bad mana draw. I pulled out Merieke Ri Beret deck and fell victim the same outcome.

Do I think it was just a bad night of **** draws? Yeah.
Do I think Sliver's would play much better in a slow moving commander game? Yes.

However, I'm notorious for decks that just suck the fun out of everything. Winter Orb, Ankh of Mishra, Citadel of Pain, Orb of Dreams, ManaBarbs.
or
Sands of Delerium and Eon Hub.

Which brings me to the full point of this thread.
I have a month to design and construct a new deck concept and I am thinking defense for days. Things like Worship, less so things like Platinum Angel.
My other option was, since they're expecting either slivers or some bull****... just come up with some ridiculous Weenie deck using Krenko, or something similar. Something that is just so overwhemling and so quick that it will make everyone sad.

I don't know... throw some **** at me. I've got a few hours before work tonight and everyone else is partying.

I have a stack of MTG cards gathering dust round here. They are the first edition, starter packs and then some expansion packs. I would have to dig them out...I mean, I can see the bag they are in right now, but to know exactly what the name of them were. I recall having Lord of the Pit, Hive, such things as that, if it means anything.
Are the worth enough to consider selling or trading them off for something I care about?

I also have a MTG disk for computer gaming, but it was made fairly specific for an OS I no longer have an won't run in compat mode....

“no combo wins”
Is that a house rule?

Not usually. I combo out in a lot of decks... But since the idea is to have this be an epic game, having some ******* with Mindcrank/Bloodchief on the board for the win just sucked the fun out of it. However, playing tonight, I realized the error in my ways, because not all combo's are kill combo's.

It was this:

I have
Sliver Queen: (2) Put a 1/1 Colorless Sliver card into play.
Ashnod's Altar: Sacrifice a creature and create two colorless mana.
[Forget name artifact]: Pay abilities of creatures cost one less colorless to play.

So, Obviously, I sac one colorless sliver for two mana, pay that two mana to creature two more and just keep doubling up.

The problem becomes, what if I HAVE to have two more creatures to survive the turn and I implement this house rule. Well, now I'm left with a choice:

1) No rules about combo's at all.
2) No Combo's at all.
3) Cap the combo's that involve creating life, mana, creatures, etc etc.

my kid played a similar mono-black list with the altar and a sac outlet to mill everyone out...

back to your question but with a slight change: everyone "could" still play EDH decks but play 1v1 so combos aren't important.
do a ladder system or best 2 out of 3 or swiss...

We occasionally do whacky drafts. The whole idea of this is to have a large group game. Ill probbly buy a big dice or something that can be passed around as we hold more of these.

Its casual, but I wanna have something stand out.

All defense.
Overwhelming creatures
Something

Nerds....
I tried to get my wife to let me teach her to play but she wasnt having it. All my friends I played with as a teen moved away. My brother got into it with the newer stuff but I don't care for it. I still have all my cards though. Too much sentimental value.

Can't really give any input, just sharing a story lol.

Hm. green tokens, blue for control and white for defense.

That could be a hell of an annoying deck.

I don’t know the term hug.

If it was me I'd be looking at blue red decks since they always seem the most random and just crazy. I can't guarantee it would do well but the problem I've always had with EDH is games just drag on and get too huge to keep track of, some chaos would be just the thing to shake things up. Didn't they just redo Ravnica for the third time? Would be a good source for new generals from Izzit.

And just like that I'm considering spending my day off going through my trunk of cards and building an EDH deck...I kind of hate you all for that.
