68 Specials on HPA

I've been working on this for a bit a can now report success.
The internal volume of the SMG/68 Special, Prolite, and the CVX valve are all about the same. What is different is the internals. The poppets in the 68 Special valve are huge. I cut them down and slotted them to improve internal gas volume and flow. The barrel end poppet is also turned down to the diameter of a Prolite barrel end poppet for improved gas flow.

The power tube is also opened up and has a cross bar added for the valve stop.

I'm getting 280+ fps and cycles perfectly.

Thanks, just finished a third one.
Shoots fantastic at 850 psi.
I'll have to see if Carp wants it back yet.

Any chance you can whip up a rough shop drawing of the modifications?

I'll work on that. The picture shows the modifications.

I just finished these mods to my own Special... I'm hoping to try it out later this month.

I had a ProLite valve lying around so I modified the front plunger to work instead of the Special, but everything else is similar.

Thanks for the quick writeup and pictures, Mr. G... they really helped. I've had this Special for several years and only fielded it once due to a serious lack of Co2 in the area.

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them.”

Bret. You gave new life to the 68 Specials. I will have to put one aside for this mod.
Great work!

These great guns deserve to be more than just wall hangers.
I just did another one and everything I did could not raise the fps above 240. Then it hit me. Check the tank. It was the problem. I have an output gauge to check tank pressure and sure enough, the tank output was low at 650 psi. I put another tank on that was at 850 psi and after laughing maniacally for several minutes, I discovered that it was now a problem to get the fps below 300.
I use an on/off ASA with an Ashcroft 0 to 3000 psi gauge to get an accurate measurement of the tank output. You must have at least 800 psi for this mod to work. 850 to 900 is perfect. SHP is another option.

Nice work! If you're willing to modify a few more I'll send you mine?
