I bought that expansion chamber with the hope of buying that VM over a year ago. I never bought the VM and sold the expansion chamber to b-cuzz to use on a Spyder of his (I think). Crazy that the two pieces found their way together anyway!

Performed the Washer mod to hold the hammer spring in place on the black VMX.... works like a charm!

Still looking for someone to lighten up a hammer for me...

Nice work with the spring mod!

As for drilling the hammer; you will need access to a drill press with cooling, as well as drills suited to do work in stainless steel. You will probably have to take it someplace to get the modifications done to it.

I had a maximizer at one point. It was all aluminium... which sounds great in theory, but it had some design flaws. First, it lacked any orings, and second, the sear literally chewed the crap out of it.

I did have Palmer add a groove for a oring, that seemed to help cycling, but the sear was always an issue. I tried polishing the heck out of it... but it kept digging in.

I also had palmers make me custom "super effecient valve", which had the odd quirk that the gun would not cycle at all if there was no paint in the breech! I'm not totally sure they knew what they were doing with that mod.

Do you have pics?

lol- ya, that gun.

Well, I bought it back in 91. it had the ugly purple camo, and non-ambi cocking knob. I don't have any pics of that, but it looks just like this:

Around 92 or so it went to Carters because that was the "cool" thing to do.

I added a homemade proshot kit, and cover for the side slot. I loved those grips. The guy that made them for Carter quit around that time, so few were made.

It was still pretty stock interally though. So around 93 or so it was sent to CopperT for the full "maximizer upgrade. Basically, aluminium hammer, backspin bolt, plus valve and trigger work.

Then got bored around 94 or so and sent it in to Palmers. Mostly to lighten up:

The work was typical of Dan Debone- Palmers CNC wizard, but he got fired a few weeks after... some sort of drama.

By that time, I wa using my Montneels for tournaments, so the VM became the "fun gun". There was a trend around 96 or so for "ultra small speedball guns".

So I literally took a hacksaw and cut a chunk off the body! made the barrel shorter as well, hammer, grip, etc.

Then I hit it with some oven cleaner for that..... "shiny" look.

By the late 90s, i was just playing scenerio games. At had added a GPS system, lasers, scopes, flashlight, quick-release sling, etc.
I even had a silencer made from a lawnmower exhaust!

By 2000 or so, I was super bored with paintball, and sold off most everything I had. The VM went to Tim at VMempire.com

He made some refinements, but it never got much use.

So he later sold it to CHaos.

He also made some more modifications.

But it had a structural flaw. Way back when I hit it with the hack saw, I cut too much off. Eventually, there was a failure, and it was no longer usable.
At some point he had a new VM customized to look like that old gun, but without the design flaws. I don't have a picture of that handy.

um... that poor vm. lol.

I have two of those hammer / bolt set ups that came with the first version of the vm68s. They are far and few because Sheridan would replace them for free through warranty for the hammer and bolt that we have today. If I can, I will take pics and post them here. They ARE significantly different.

I remember they had weird shorter hammers... but longer cycle length, and longer bolts. Those first few were oddballs, but otherwise the entire production cycle stayed mostly unchanged from 1990 to 2000.

Thats a really impressive run considering that by 93 or so it was already outdate- too heavy, too slow, too ineffecient. But it stuck around. The other guns of its generation, 68-Specials, and Golden Eagles barely lasted a year or 2.

But it was my favorite era- the early 90s. Everything was clunky and mechanical.

So another project has come up that will help finish my PTP collection so i will be getting rid of the purple vmx... I technically dont need 2 VMX's considering i will only be playing with the black vmx i'm upgrading.. I fully rebuilt the purple one with palmers rebuild kit, installed matching expansion chamber, close match trigger shoe, and a pro-line bottom line(stainless braided line a bit too long but works).... zero leaks and cycles perfectly, though I haven't chrono'd it. I took some better pics of the ano flaws but still in great shape.. Expansion chamber is in near perfect condition.... It will come with pictured original bottomline setup as well. It will be a sad day to get rid of it but hopefully it will go to a loving home that will use it rather than just collect dust.
