Spyder VS3 - Mech - Parts Bin - Project VARTROS

Project: Vertical Adapter, Rocking Trigger, Regulator, and On/Off Suck (VARTROS)

Won: I was intrigued by the balance valve, and I had never tinkered with one before.

Bee: For those unaware, these have a bastard vertical adapter that can't accept standard regulators. They also have a combo on/off and regulator that is...fussy.

See: I rebuilt things as necessary but could not get any regulator seat to work in the stock reg/ASA combo. I tried all kinds of stuff.

For: The on/off portion worked after rebuild - most of the time. It's sensitive to how much it's screwed in for the on and off positions; threading it in or out too much causes leaks.

PHIVE (Google it; I had to.): The electronic rocking trigger frame would not work with a fresh Energizer alkaline 9V battery. The only thing I had on hand was an 11.1V airsoft battery that I rigged up to the e-frame. The solenoid, eyes, and both shooting modes all work. However, there are very few electros I like, so I wanted a mech frame instead.

SYX (an actual paintball marker): The stock on/off/reg is a dovetail mount. The mech frame I had on hand has offset mounting holes.

Lucky: I had a parts bin mech frame milled down to fit the flat bottom VS3 body. Most Spyder bodies are round bottom, and the trigger frames match the round contour. Without milling it down, the sear wouldn't engage the hammer.

Ate: I had to Dremel the VS3 body a bit to make room for the sear pin. There's still the inner raised oval portion of the mechanical trigger that fully encapsulates the sear pin.

Nein: I replaced the blown gage. Not significant; I just wanted to use "nein". "Eye" was tempting too, but they're removed since I'm not using the electronic frame. I guess "Nein eyes" is appropriate.

    ...

Ex: I used a parts bin regulator after having to rebuild it. Someone had put the input fitting into the gage output. The seals were crusty. Some improvised oring-ing was utilized to get it working. It still has a tiny leak out the bottom, but it holds pressure and recharges sufficiently.

Why: The rest of the bottom line is an "abomination" (as a friend called it) with parts on hand used to make it work - Spyder male to standard male air fitting in the foregrip, Spyder offset hole ASA with standard fitting output (not Spyder?), standard air fittings as shown for the rest. I only had short pieces of macro line on hand.

    Z. I used a cut down Specialized rubber bike handle grip over the foregrip. It didn't have the stock foregrip cover.

It's shooting 280fps at 240psi (reg output verified with a nice gage, not just the one on the marker) with a standard length hammer spring (as opposed to the short stock hammer spring) and is quite consistent over the chrono with nylon riot balls. It was recocking sub-200psi with the short stock hammer spring, but it was only shooting 190fps at that pressure. It took close to 300psi to achieve 275fps with the short stock hammer spring and the RVA almost all the way in, so I thought I might as well try a standard length hammer spring. With the standard length hammer spring, it started recocking reliably without shooting a ball at about 220psi.

Track down a Trinity VS front block and get rid of that janky reg hanging off the bottom. I’m pretty sure I have one if you do go looking though, it was sold to me
as a standard spyder block but was most definitely not the case.

LOL. This was just to tinker with the balance valve and get it usable with parts on hand. You should've seen what I had rigged up just to get regulated air to it and power the electronic frame before its current configuration. I'm not sure how much more time or money I want to put into it, but I'm considering an adapter, better matching regulator, metal mech frame (preferably single trigger, would need this one milled down as well), and an on/off ASA. Please PM a pic and price of what you have for the Trinity VS front block. Thanks.

thats an interesting build for sure... lol i get it though, more of a proof of concept than anything else.
the balance valves are neat too.
if you want to run one, id suggest going the other way; add the BV to a standard mech spyder rather than converting a VS spyder.

something like a newer xtra or even victor.

I tried the balance valve in a slim striker body. I had to remove the cross-body valve retaining pin and plug the holes. The hammer venting holes on the bottom of the bodies were also different. I plugged one and drilled others to get it to match the VS3 body. I also had to drill extra holes in the normal front block vertical adapter, since it was the choke point. I had learned that from getting my Spyder SE to run at a lower pressure.

After all that, it still needed about 360psi to reach 280fps.

i thought about buying a newer Xtra to put the balance valve in, but it doesn’t appear there’s an easy way to add an LPC without machining. Maybe there’s an adapter I don’t know about. The balance valve definitely needs an LPC. In fact, the VS3 LPC has more volume than the older LPC I had for the slim striker body. When I put the VS3 LPC on the slim striker body, I gained some velocity for a given set pressure.

Lastly, the VS3 has a top pull pin for the bolt and a smaller center feed clamping feed neck. I looked at a lot of the various Spyder models, and I didn’t see any that have these. They all have the vertical feed neck that still requires a straight elbow like the slim striker body I had in the parts bin. There are bolt on clamping feed neck replacements for this, but they’re bigger and another thing to find and buy.

The VS factory set up offers the best volume. The Trinity front block looks great and adds standard threads for a regulator but the LPC is smaller and the front block more restrictive in air flow. Therefore I highly recommend a VS series CP reg adapter. Most places that still have them give them away. You can have one for $10.

Balance valves fitted in other Spyders are great. With a little work and part sourcing you’ve a nice smooth shooter. Just say goodbye to efficiency.

Lastly, there is no aftermarket adapter for an LPC in the newest Spyders you mentioned.

scottieb are the balanced valves really that bad when it comes to efficiency? I have one I'm thinking about using in a T-Board build, but they mess with your efficiency that much, I might just go with a Tornado valve.

Opposite ends of the spectrum there. The Tornado valve is much more efficient, almost as efficient as it gets. The balance valve is comparable to an old Shocker.

That's crazy. I guess I'll be going with the Tornado valve instead
