To brew the mead of poetry would be a blessing indeed

Had similar issue fermenting cherry last month, it was 1 gal batch, the #10 rubber bung failed first so only had a foam volcano. I had the fermenter in a 5 gal bucket so cleanup was not too bad.
Never fun to clean when it happen

Ha, yeah it’s definitely working. I like the oversized bucket idea. More headspace equals lower pressure. Why, it’s almost like paintball valve physics apply to brewing.

I like 2 gallon buckets if I'm going to make 1 gallon, 5 gallon buckets for 3-4 gallons and 7 gallon buckets for 5 gallons.

I’m pretty sure some skin and seeds pushed up and clogged the airlock until pressure reached maximum. It must have been quite the show, I found blueberry bits in a 10 foot radius of the corner. I’ll have to upgrade to a bucket next batch.

If you haven't vented the ones on the ends and changed out the airlock you may want to. They look like they are about to add to the abstract art on your ceiling.

That's 1 of the reasons I like using buckets for primary fermentation. Having more head space helps cut down on the messy cleanup. It also allows you to use a full gallon of water or even a little more than a gallon so when you rack into secondary you end up with a gallon of mead.
