I strongly encourage you to install spacesniffer and get a better understanding of what's cluttering your boot drive. I keep my boot drives small so that bootable backups are fast to process and take up less space. Secondary drives don't need as frequent backup since they can more easily have raid redundancy.

0.5-1TB is enough my most demanding systems. 1TB reserved for laptops that lack 2nd bay.

Ironically my I was at micro center to return some parts, and my nephew also happened to kill his HDD yesterday, so I was looking at SSDs for him. Figured Id peep m.2 drives too.

They had an Inland Premium 1tb m.2 drives on sale. I figured I may as well get one.

I put it in last night, but I still have yet to attempt to move the OS over, or even boot it up. I gotta figure out how to get the OS copied over if possible.

BrickHaus Quite the leap from HDD to M.2! Good luck with the migration.

Im struggling with that now. Im trying to to this OS migration on 2 different pcs. I grabbed my nephews pc as hes got a hp elite 8200 with a failing 2tb hdd. I figured Id practice cloning his hdd to the new sata III ssd I put ib for him, theb repeat the migration on my rig. I spent most of my evening last night trying.

So far, I manqged to make an image bavk up of his hdd and save it to the ssd via windows ( figured it wouldnt hurt)

Then I downloaded tuxboot, and clonezilla as this was supposed to help me close his os on boot.

I saved what I believe to be the correct files to my usb stick, but no matter how many times Ive reset and rebooted. And selected either the usb hard drive, or usb floppy listed in bios ( everything else is sata) it it like it reads the usb, then jumps back to the hdd to boot.

And with his hdd the boot up and shut down process is taking forever.

I just got back home from a nice long walk, figured Id have another look at his migration today.

If you have any tips for me, im all ears! Lol

Brick- I highly suggest that you take some time to migrate the items you want to keep to another storage medium or the cloud. Verify that you have the key to any programs you wish to reinstall.

Go to MS and download the NEWEST version of Windows 10 to a USB, there is a tool for it and super easy to do.

The FIRST thing that I would do would be to disconnect everything aside from the OS HDD. Use the USB installer "advanced" option and go in and delete all the partitions of that drive.
Go back inside and disconnect the HDD, re-install the M.2 drive. DO NOT have any other drive connected while you perform a clean install on the M.2. If you leave other disks connected it will almost assuredly put "system reserved" partitions on one of the other disks (ask me how I know this).
Once you are done, go back in and reconnect the other drives. Use disk management to initialize and set those drives up the way you want.

You will find that even with an older system, having your OS run from an SSD/NVME drive is a FAR better experience.

      Punkncat.

Im starting to think thatll be the easist way in both cases.

My rig was just loaded up with its OS and files a few months ago. I really dont even have much on it aside from driver updates, steam, and a few games. It wouldnt be too hard to do this to mine.

My nephew would benefut from it as there is adware on his pc from Micomp, the refurb reseller. I just worry about getting his pc back up to snuff with all of his apps as hes 12 and may not be happy with me when I tell him I clean wiped it, and hes gotta re download and log i to everything.

Sounds like the bootloader isnt properly configured.I haven't cloned a drive in many years. I do recall using clonezilla when I did. Guides are plentiful for this work. Over the past year or two I've been using Macurium Reflect for my windows system, which has cloning capability apparently. Here's a guide.

I like Macrium for most cloning. I use the Samsung utility for those specific drives. I have honestly tried to get away from it. There are almost always this collection of strange happenings that go along with a clone.

I just loaded a fresh copy windows from a usb onto his pc with just the ssd connected. And updated the drivers. The loaded everything I could. I was able to get into his minecraft, and outlook accounts. Getting some of his stuff up to snuff, but I cant get into his steam acct. I copied his steam folder over but i still cant log in. I havent wiped his hdd yet, but once he gets back ilp make sure we are into all of his accounts then ill reformat his hdd for extra storage.
