My mind is blown. Calling around to find a price to rehydro a few of my steel tanks when I found out that in Canada, they no longer need to be rehydro'ed and can be filled indefinately according to Transport Canada regs. When did this become a thing as I was under the impression that a 5 year hydro test was mandatory? It's been awhile since I played and part of that reason was needing to rehydro my expired tanks or get new ones.
Just found this out yesterday about 48/3000 tanks.

Anything under 1L of displacement - below 61 cu inches - does not require hydro.
As far as i know the tank life still applies, though. Anything over 15 years old can't be filled, at least with fiber wrapped tanks.

The issue with wrapped tanks is both the chemical degradation of the fiber and the epoxy (like how old O-rings break down) and the mechanical stress of repeated expansion/contraction.
With a steel tank, basically there's no chemical degradation, natch, and they're designed so the stresses of the expansion/contraction are under the yield limit of the metal. Like how a spring can be compressed and released thousands of times- think a 'Cocker hammer spring, or a car's suspension- without permanently bending.
That's why the old 2" rule exists- a tank that small doesn't flex enough to cause damaging stresses.

I've been told about steelies in the past, but wasn't 100 percent sure. I've always operated under they no hydro needed rule. I love the under 62cu fibre tanks don't need to be rehydro'd for 15 years. I only have one tank that it's a 68. Often people don't know an you can find cheap 45/45 for really good prices have have 10 years of use out of them.
