let me first separate two issues in this post and two different posts
    haggling and pawn shops
    first on haggling

it is an art. An art that is learned over time.
the more you do it, the better and more at ease you get with it.

    here is some overall tips

one. ALWAYS know how much you can spend/ what its worth and STICK TO IT.
it is very easy to talk yourself into thinking "this isnt so much over what i can do "

unless its a very rare situation you need (key word NEED) it.

if it is above what you want to pay or what its worth... WALK AWAY.

two.. always be willing to walk away unless exception noted above.

three.. know as much as you can about what your wanting BEFORE YOU GET THERE... be willing (but respectful) to do a search from your phone for a particular piece of info (ex with an air purifier how much are / how common are filters) ..
dont be googling everything right in front of them.. have some idea before getting there.

four ... INSPECT ITEM CAREFULLY .. if you did tip three you have some idea what to look for.

five... BE REASONABLE WITH YOUR COUNTER OFFER.. dont be a pawn star douche and try to offer (ex) a dollar for a 50 dollar item... now your the douche .

six... ALWAYS (and i cant stress this enough) ALWAYS BE RESPECTFUL AND NICE.. even if the guy/gal is a complete douchwaffle.

if they are being a complete jerk, very in your face/pressuring, or insulting your intelligence just politely walk away .

seven.. when you play the game , dont look like your playing it..

this is where experience comes in...you and the person both know your playing a game. but if both of you are relaxed and respectful it will not look like you are.
just a nice back and forth that may or may not result in a sale.

Ill use me as an example .. I will ask to see something , ask some questions and engage in some pleasantries.
when it comes to price in my mind i use my knowledge to inspect the item and have an idea what its worth.
if its a good deal i dont haggle and say to the person "its quite fair and ill take it"
you be surprised how far this good will (most of the time) will go..
be it coming back in future and/or if there is something else you want to get.

if its not in my budget or think the price is high i will offer something REASONABLE . they may counter back. If i like it.. deal done. at worst i may counter ONE (this isnt an auction so dont keep countering back and forth) time ..
Or i may say "this is all I have, can we make a deal"
if they say they cant i am nice and tell them "i understand"
maybe with some more small talk..

my overall view is "if its meant to be its meant to be"

      now on to pawn shops..

a pawnshop is a business that buys thing outright to sell and sells things that the people used as collateral but didnt pay off what they owed.

they are to make money (besides loans) by buying low and selling higher.

outside of any laws of that state they follow a combination of three factors to determine value of sale

      1. what they got it for

      2. what the overall value is (this is dependent on the managers knowledge and/or research)

      3. how long its been there

i have had three different experiences in all the pawn shops i have been to.

one.. they have a set price and will not bend on that unless forced to by some overwhelming factor

there is one pawnshop that has had the same paintball gun, tank and some accessories for over two years at same price.
the tank is out of hydro (but a nice tank) and the gun is good one in great condition with special cammo (gtek 170r) , and some other accessories (basic).
but the guy is an arrogant douchwaffle of questionable reputation (even for a pawn shop)

two.. willing to haggle most of the time (depending on above factors). especially if cash in hand (no credit)

the guy in above example will at times for cash not charge tax.. its rare but does happen.

the manager before (maybe owner who knows) and some other shops i go to more than willing (if your serious and respectful) to haggle .
with one shop that (right or wrong) DELIBERATELY prices too high so you will haggle.
IMO weeds the gullible (not saying thats right) or "just looking" from someone wanting to buy.

three.. this i have only seen at one shop and find quite unique/refreshing

      they DONT haggle in anyway..
but what they do is put on a price sticker with the initial price.
then 4 or five dates with how much it will be at that time.

the time passing between dates varies but you know EXACTLY WHEN the price will lower and how much

If you have patience and some luck you can get some great deals.

the staff is quite respectful, willing to help with info and testing (the later rare at times) , and seems the most above board of any pawnshop i have worked with..
      sadly no paintball gear.

i have lost some things before price lowered to what i wanted to pay..
but my patience was rewarded a few times like for a big shop vac and a nice boombox.

      hope these two posts help

Pawn shops I'll always haggle, 99 times out of 100 they have wiggle room. It also helps when I've known the family that runs the main pawnshop I frequent for nearly 30 years. I remember going in with my dad in the early 90s when they were in a very tiny space and I'd take my saved up allowance and buy Super Nintendo games. When I was in my early 20s they moved to a much larger space and started stocking other things (better electronics, music stuff etc) The old man who was the father of the family retired and his son took the business over. He knows if I want something that I'm usually going to haggle and he also knows if I'm haggling that I have cash in my pocket right there and then. Have scored some quite good deals from the place over the years. Best deal to come out of that place for my family was a ring my dad bought my mom he paid I think $300-400 he took it had it polished and the then took it to a family friend who does appraisals. Appraisal comes back at $2K. Even though my parents split back in 2010 my mom still has the ring and still wears it. She's always said that despite my father's failings he knew a good deal when he saw it.

I had one pawn shop that I could always haggle with and it worked great. Two of the others don't move price very much.

Best deals I got were a nearly mint 05 Black Magic for $20 and a Gen 3 night vision monocular for I think $40
