Subaru Motorsports USA driver, Travis Pastrana, set a new record of 5 minutes 28.67 seconds at the 2021 Mt. Washington Hillclimb on the way to an overall event victory at the wheel of the Airslayer STI, his 862-horsepower Gymkhana 2020 Subaru WRX STI.
The new mark cut more than sixteen seconds from his winning time from the 2017 running of the event up the narrow, steep and treacherous 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road. Pastrana blitzed the mountain to set a time that was over 45 seconds ahead of the second-fastest competitor.
The Mt. Washington Hillclimb, traditionally held every three years, is one of the most challenging motorsport events in the United States and the oldest hillclimb in North America. In addition to its long history, the tallest mountain on the East Coast brings famously unpredictable weather and a mixed-surface road, forcing drivers to contend with grip levels that shift suddenly from tarmac to gravel and back again in the middle of the climb. With an average grade of 12% and an uneven surface bounded by serious drops above the treeline, Mt. Washington requires courage, skill and the right equipment for the challenge.
The highly developed aero package on the Airslayer STI provided a significant downforce advantage against the 600-horsepower WRX STI rally car used by Pastrana to set the 2017 mark. Along with a significant power bump, major suspension advancements and an ultra-light curb weight, the Airslayer was tailor-made for the wide-open mentality of hillclimbs. Still, the level of commitment displayed by Pastrana on the record run meant huge entertainment for the thousands of fans who lined the road at the spectator points along the roadway.

Many times I've questioned the decision of putting Pastrana in the driver's seat, and several times I've been gobsmacked by his success. It's incredible. I've driven the road in the video and there's really no way that the video conveys how steep portions of it are, and how insane it is that he's doing 70+ mph through them.Paintball Selection and Storage - How to make your niche paintball part idea.

Thanks for posting this. I am pretty sure a friend of mine used to drive that road several times each year.... with a fully loaded fuel oil truck. Somewhere up there is a photo of him and the truck. He was told that it's the biggest thing that had been on the mountain in many a year. But that was in his younger days.
If I remember correctly, he could deliver a winter's fuel supply in three loads. He went back home for a visit and took his wife up the hill. The guy was worried about him driving his one ton pickup to the top. Either Brent pointed out a photo or had the guy call the older guys at the top.
Seeing that road makes me appreciate why they said (at the time) that he was the craziest mofo that had driven the road.

Yikes! I have not viewed any of those. I don't think I would even slow boat up that path... probably not even as a passenger!

I remember watching the old videos of him doing this. He’s NUTS!!
I’ve driven the auto-road.
It’s white nuckle driving at 10mpg in parts. It’s steep it’s NARROW (I still don’t believe it’s “wide enough for 2 cars to pass at any point”).
I couldn’t do it this year. I had to get out and have my wife drive 🤣😂. We tried to take her Honda Pilot up to the top. I don’t drive that thing much and can’t tell where my front passenger tire is…and that is important for that drive!
Even with my wife driving we hit one of the long straightaways about 2.5 or 3 miles up (just at the tree line) and we had to turn around. Nothing but sky on the driver side of the road. She said she’d definitely make it up, but no way she’d be able to make the down trip.
I guess we’ll just have to take Mt. Washington on foot next year (or ride with Pastrana).

I love how his hat is just tossed on the console, and he has the time to toss a thumbs up to a bystander all while smoking the record.Last edited by BrickHaus; 08-20-2021, 07:53 AM.

this is the guy from nitro circus. he's insane on a dirt bike as well.
funny thing is, in an interview he was asked if he's as wild on the roads with his bike as he is in nitro circus.
His response IIRC was "are you kidding? i dont ride my motorcycle on public roads. its too dangerous..."
this was quite some time ago and i cant find the interview. (just what i remember)

Yes same guy he has won championships and X Games gold medals in supercross, motocross, freestyle motocross, and rally racing. He’s really good on a bike to.
He’s not wrong about public roads. At least if you screw up on a controlled corse it’s mostly your fault. Not some soccer mom checking her Facebook status while blowing red lights. At least the car is designed to take massive damage your wrapped in a cage with lots of safety features and fail safes. + a full crew on site if something happens. People get killed and seriously injured a lot more on the street then they do at the track. Ever see some of those crazy wrecks people walk away from? Engineering at its finest, well that and a lil bit of luck.
Love my bike but I slowed down a lot no more super bikes for me. I only ride very specific areas now that are not as populated and very little driveways. I stopped riding at night and only take it out when the weather is perfect.
There is a video of a car going off at the top of that track to back when it was dirt. I believe the guy lived to race again.
This one is a good one. But not the one I’m thinking of.
This is a good story about the prep that goes into racing at the Peak. Also explains why I think the guy Travis waves at is more of a marker then anything.
