    Trimming Spyder main drive springs

Hi Spyder Whisperers...I have a .50 cal low impact day lined up for this Sunday with myself and the fam.

My Spyder Opus is shooting too hot at 315fps ( the fields outdoor low impact fps is 220fps ) . My RVA is backed all the way out, and my tank pressure is 800 psi , non adjustable.

The main drive spring looks like a regular spyder main spring to me.

i won't have time to have a Spyder spring kit shipped to me.

How many turns can I safely clip off this main spring , before it causes cycling problems?

    Cheers, M7

No idea, I'd say clip 1/4-1/2 a ring off and test. Continue testing until either you get the desired result or it doesn't work.

If it doesn't work you are in the same boat you are now if it does end up working then you're good to go

yeah, you make a good point, right now I can't use the gun at that particular field, so I have nothing to lose.

I guess I will just go for it , and clip slowly, test, repeat

I know the springs are a specific dim for....reasons....so hopefully i can get the gun down to 220fps before breaking it entirely!

I've never trimmed a spring so I'm of no help. I've always used Shocktech shims if a spring is worn out, too soft, or too short.

Actually, I do remember back in day, I had clipped a tippmann carbine main spring for indoor play, and it worked well, even though noticeably shorter than stock.....and then I kept a stock length spring for outdoor. Now those main springs are so long, i figured they'd be more forgiving than a shorter spyder spring, but like I agreed with Trbo, i'll just have to experiment at this point today. Hopefully we don't have to rent those clunky .50 cal ft 12 tippmanns tomorrow!

Could also try using washers/shims on the valve spring to add more pressure to the cup seal. Or stretch the spring a touch to add a bit more pressure.

Wow, what field has a velocity limit that low? Just the difference in mass should bring impact way down. Do the balls actually reliably?

It was Wasaga, confirmed at the field today, their low impact is very low impact at 220

I spent the morning trimming Spyder springs and was successful getting the guns that low, but the drive springs are pretty short now compared to stock!

Glad to see it worked, I was wondering if you got the velocity you wanted and get reliable cycle

all 4 of our .50 cal guns were spyder opus based. The two Spyder Opus guns were actually very reliable all day. The spyder stormers had some issues. One stormer was occasionally needing to be recocked throughout the day, but was usable. The other Stormer had a completely separate failure, the cup seal failed as I aired it up! They gave me a loaner .50 cal tippmann , so I just played with that for the day.
    Working...
