    Intercompatablility

    So strange idea of the month does anyone know the intercompatibility of marker boards? I know that there is likely some parts that are interchangeable between guns regs, on/offs, and a couple others but today i am interested in the electronic paintball markers boards. This is a rather strange question to ask a group that loves pumps and old guns but hey you are my paintball outlet .

    So here is what i know, most electronic markers today use boards that operate that marker. ELI5 a marker receives inputs from the trigger, on off button, and eyes and sometime other inputs (bluetooth, hopper, gyro, other secret sauce stuff). It takes these inputs and outputs a voltage to the servo which releases air to the valve and shoots the gun. Input voltages can vary and output voltages can vary but that is the simple version there are led, oled and other screens as well as onboard switches and other inputs / outputs that can be used.

    What i am trying to figure out is how close are these boards to each other and what limits intercompatability? Is it something as simple as size / shape or as complicated as maybe a mini outputs 5V 1mA per shot maybe a Lux outputs 2.5V 5mA? Would you maybe be able to use a Lux board on a Automag 👿(Who does not want an automag to talk dirty to them?)? Does anyone know of any deep dives into the boards done by anyone O scope readings, multimeter readings the whole 9? Finally anyone interested in doing this dive and or offering a board up to the cause to test(I have a mini and maybe a G4 that i can offer.)?

    Lots of factors

    Size/shape obviously

    Size and location of mounting screw holes

    Connection to the trigger, location and type of switch

    Screen/led lights location

    Battery, 9v or something built in with a different voltage

    Input buttons besides the trigger

    Output voltage to the solenoid(s) (this is one of the bigger ones)

    Solenoid (s) wiring type/connections to the board

    Eyes type and connection to the board

    Any one of these can stop one board from being used in a different marker. Size and shape/mounting being the first factor that usually rules out one board from being used in a different marker

      The DP G3 and E1/E2 use swappable boards. I'm sure there may be a few others, but for the reasons Trbo listed, it's not very common.

        Yeah I guess I should have mentioned that. Typically any interchangable boards are from the same company

        I own a vanguard creed, the board is the same as the vanguard demon.

        One spool, one poppet using the same board

        Now if only they were easier to find....

          What you need is the requirements for the solenoid, and the basic characteristics of it, such as it normally open, does it need a second input or a second solenoid, etc. Then you need to know how long of a dwell time does the pneumatics need to actually complete a cycle.

          Ignoring the physical limitations of course:
          Could you put an Angel LCD board in an Impulse? Probably. I have even driven 5v solenoid directly with 9v. This probably isn't good for the long term life of a it, but mostly it will work. Smart Parts even put new overpressure relief springs in their solenoids so that they could over pressurize them to not have to put an LPR in the Shocker and Impulse. Now if the dwell time between the Angel and the Impulse is too different you would probably have to adjust the valve springs or HPR pressure, etc to get the right velocity.

          Could you put an Angel LCD board in a Shocker (shoebox)? No. Not at all. You need two solenoids working in concert to make this happen. One to control the ram, and the other to actually fire the marker.

          Could you put an Angel LCD board in an E-mag? Probably not. There is a difference between a solenoid valve and a solenoid. The E-mag used a very strong solenoid with a large battery pack in order to pull the hefty RT trigger pull. I suspect you could perhaps modify a spyder board to do something like this, they have a huge capacitor which presumably dumps into that solenoid to activate it, but I would treat solenoid valves and solenoids differently. If I wanted to make an E-mag the simplest thing to do seems to be make a pneumag with a solenoid valve instead of the mechanical solenoid that AGD used.

          With some markers it could really be as simple as moving the frame with the electronics in it over and just cutting and splicing a few wires for others it would be very hard to make it all work together. There might be someone out there with lots of knowledge and equipment but in my own testing you don't have to be all that precise to get something that works. Most of it was working on a bizarre open bolt electro autococker, that started with a rainmaker board and then moved onto a BASIC Stamp custom board (Warpig even has an article explaining most of what you need to build your own board, they inspired me but the second basic stamp is way better than the first one that they used).
