    WGP Ram - failure?

Rebuilding a 20 year old WGP ram from my brother-in-law’s CCM S5. Gun would cycle but 3-way leaked like a sieve. Decided I might as well replace the ram o-rings while I’m at it. After much effort got new o-rings in and tried true suction test and neither side of ram works.

I replaced the o-rings with the same sized one. So wondering if the ram is just worn out and needs replacing? Given it’s a stock 2k WGP ram it is nothing special. It’s also running a stock WGP 3-way and was going to replace the o-ring on it but ram seems to be the issue.

    Advice?

Hmmm, the reason I'm asking this is because I've done it, are you sure you have the right o ring size? I had a smaller ring fall into my compartment of larger ones and put a ring that was one size too small on the ram once. Spoiler alert, it didn't work

Size 010 on the tip of the ram. It does not seam very tight. I think 006 for the internal oring and it feels pretty tight. That internal oring was not pleasant to remove or install.

The o-ring might be just slightly out of spec. Have you tried pressurizing it? It might seal up once you give it some gas and work it a little, get the o-ring to seat and expand a bit.

Have not tried pressurizing it. Good call. I'll give that a try.

Yeah, the suction test isn't that definitive. Rams that pass the suction test can still leak, and vice versa. Put some air on it and go from there. FWIWs, those sizes of o-rings you listed are correct, and yeah the interior o-ring on the ram base is a colossal pain.

How did you seal up the ram body onto the base? I often have trouble with that bit, maybe it's your problem. Or maybe you have a leak at a barb. Either way, airing up the gun will let you know pretty quickly what's up.

Haven't fully sealed it, which is likely an issue as well. I'll put some blue loctite on it. I bought a special vice grip that holds the ram body without scoring and made life way easier. I'll get it all back together and air it up and report back.

I'm having success with teflon taping the threads instead of using loctite.

Good to know. I always prefer teflon as it's easier to work with. I'll experiment when I have time.

Everything is back together but the 3-way is just blasting air now. It’s the only o-ring size I don’t have, of course. I think I’m going to retime from the start once I get new 3-way orings. Haven’t rebuilt the LPR either, so might as well. Then the whole gun has new rings.

On a side note, my Ressi with ID 3-way leaks until cycled abs then is fine. Is this a sign the LPR is too low? Ressi will be going to a new home shortly so want it 100 percent.

Yes possibly. Although my ID 3-way does not leak when I lower the LPR pressure to where the marker barely cycles. Might be a sign of needing a rebuild.

I increased the LPR and seemed to fix the issue. I think it wasn’t enough pressure to seat the orings until it fired.
