    "Flint Lock" paintball gun

    Hello all,

Anyone ever made a "flint lock" paintball gun where the arming of the "flint" arm the gun?

I know there were some paintball gun put in those stock. Looking at the linkage ... for science ... 😁

NSD2 ( netsurferdude2) came close but, he didn't have enough meat in the stock. Instead he did a nice finger pump, kind of disguised as a ramrod. iirc

I'd love to see it ...

I'm contemplating making a front loading single shot ... With a "working" ram road to push the ball down and everything ...

      What platform did he used?

The reason I made mine were was for that Pirate Game at EMR. I wanted some single shot pistols to wear on a baldric.

The idea wasn't mine, I got the idea from BretG. He has a set of dueling pistols. Here is a pic of all 4 together (LtoR:Bret's#1, Mine, Bret's #2, :

Bret showed me that adding a 1in extension on the lower tube you could use a KP trigger group, hammer and K-length spring. I copied his method to make my two guns. One I threw in an old beat up K stock.

The other I made from a Denix cap gun "replica". My original intent was to keep the cap popping mechanism so when I shot the gun, the hammer would drop and hit the cap. The flash, smoke, and bang would happen just as the ball shot. I never got this far. Its still on the list but I have other projects in the works ahead of it. This gun is cocked like a normal sheridan.

          Move onto the rifle.

I wanted a first strike gun and what better platform for FS is a single shot musket/rifle. I stole another one of Bret's ideas for this gun as well. He made a single shot sheridan rifle for Robo years ago that died at the platers. If I am wrong BretG can correct me. He used the ram rod to cock and lock the hammer on the gun. Then the percussion arm lock was used to operate the bolt. So you'd stand the gun up on the stock, push the ram rod down to cock it. Pick the rifle up and work the bolt with the percussion lock, load and when the trigger was pulled, the lock would drop, shutting the breach, and the gun would fire.

On my rifle I used a cut down phantom but similar design. The gun is made from a build-your-own Hawkings rifle kit that I found on ebay. The previous owner screwed it up so the price wasn't bad. In place of the ram rod, I put a 1/4" steel round bar. On it is a small finger catch seen below. The other end of the rod connects to the stock phantom pump arm. You press the gun against your thigh, cock the gun with on hand, load with another and let a spring push the bolt closed.

One other design of note was the work of Ty and Flounder . Wade's sheridan blunderbuss could be cocked two ways. The first was by pulling an trumpet valve to cock the gun. The other was to use a ram rod to manually cock the bolt from the front of the barrel. Paintballs could only be loaded from the muzzle with a ram rod.

If you need any pictures I can send them your way

One note to add, we used the spring from the trumpet valve to push the bolt back forward after it was cocked. It was a fairly light spring but was able to get the job done. If you wanted consistent velocity out of the gun you needed to thumb the valve when you fired to hold the bolt forward,

Thanks for the details and pictures.

does any of them get armed by pulling the flint backwards?
How did you link the hammer to the "flint" mechanism (cap?)?
I'm thinking about making it muzzleloader, this avoid a bolt, but might make a removable back end for cleanup.

I love your idea of the cap with the pop/smoke are those the same as the pop gun for kids? How does it work? (I never played or used one of those ...)
are you putting the snap finger firecracker where the powder would go?

            1. Nope.
            2. I think the throw of a standard sheridan hammer is 1in against a pretty hard spring. . So you would need a way to convert the rotational energy of the lock to the linear movement in a very small space. I drew up a small mechanism like that in CAD years ago using a small rack and pinion setup but didn't do anything with it. It can be done but you have to keep it pretty low profile.
            3. Muzzle loader would be awesome. Wade's gun is muzzle loading only.
            4. Yup, you buy the caps and put them on the nipple. A spring between the trigger and a racheting gear on the lock cocks the gun and drops it on the cap.
            5. Here is a youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Mx9hS60kiE
            6. You have to put a new cap on every shot.

At one point I wanted to do this and thought that a Splatmaster style valve setup would be a perfect start. From there you are really just dressing it up.

I did found o good donor on goodwill, but somebody bid on it and now it's more than a new one ...

Ill have to find another donor ...

Edit: I just got a nice one from the 'bay ...
Found out most of the cheap ones are "resin cast" ... So all plastic and painted on top.

Guess I have one more project on the list 😅

If you are going for cap gun check out the Denix ones. They are made from very cheap die cast aluminum. I had of them snap off when I cocked it too far back.

If you want to use the lock mechanism for cocking the bolt, use a real flint lock or percussion lock. The are sturdy and made for repeated use.

Thanks, I got a used one off the 'bay, received it yesterday ... It looks much beefier than I expected ... The "ram-rod" comes off so that's a good start.
But I found some lock mechanism kit for DIY gun at reasonable prices. If the mock-up break, I'll get one of those kit for the mechanism.

Now I've got to take it apart and figure out how to make it work ...
