Nova N3 Review - Just for the Hell(ion) of it

My new to me Nova N3 arrived in the mail today, and I am quite excited about it.

Disclosure: bought this marker used with my own hard earned cash. I have no association with Nova at all. Your results may vary and side effects may include impulsive purchasing of paintball gear or regret from reading all this dribble.

I have read a lot about these on MCB and seen some people really like them and others, well not so much. So let’s take a look!

    First Impressions:
I was very excited to learn my Nova would be delivered today. Took an educated risk on purchasing from Kijiji but there were no red flags in communication with seller so I jumped at the chance. I still could have received a box of rocks instead of a Nova. Thankfully the box did contain a well packaged Nova, an extra insert, bag of orings and a card showing how to maintain the Nova on one side and a parts explosion on the other.

The marker itself? Once freed from its bubble wrap and foam packing peanut prison it proved to be in excellent condition with barely a mark on it. One of the inserts has some minor wear, but others in great shape.

Picking up the marker, it is lighter than I expected and feels good in my hands. I would describe the anno as more basic, especially when compared to a nice cocker, but suits the marker. The grey colour contrasts well the the black parts and is simple but good looking.

Running my finger around the marker I note almost all of the edges on the Nova are smooth and rounded off. No sharp edges on the trigger guard, which is great. The only piece that has a bit of an edge is the on/off lever. It’s not sharp, but definitely has an edge on both sides. You can see some of the marks from the milling on the body, but I like that. It’s still clean, but ads an important smaller scale to these markers. This is no massively produced Ion on Emek, it’s a labour of love and effort from a few individuals. Paintball could use a lot more of this feeling, as it’s been missing for a long time.

While on the topic for the trigger frame, I found the grips to be quite comfortable using both a single finger and dual fingers on the trigger. The finger grips may be uncomfortable for those with gorilla-sized hands, but for me they were great. I did switch the grips over to a pair of Empire 45 grips that provided a little more style, but did not find them comfortable. Due to the beveled edge of the trigger frame the Empire grips stuck out a little bit as well. So the stock grips will be put back on.

The trigger when not aired up is a bit flaccid feeling and lacks the feel of the nice movement you get with say a cocker slide or hinge, or an upgraded Emek trigger. It just feels rather dead like a mag trigger. Throw on the air however, and you get a very light, responsive trigger that feels good to pull, at least in my initial use. I’ll have more to say once I’ve shot some paint through the marker.

One thing I was disappointed with was the barrel reciprocation. Yes, it does happen, but in my mind the movement was more pronounced. Why did I think this?! No idea. In all honesty I will like get one of their reciprocationless Autococker barrel adaptors if I keep this marker. Would love to throw a nice DW CF barrel on this.

Full disclosure, I have yet to shoot paint out of this yet. I cracked open a vintage bag of balls from 15+ years ago that still look better than recent field paint. I quickly tested a ball with the largest insert I have and the balls are just too big. I confirmed with a Freak kit these vintage balls were running in the 687 range, just too big for my 682 insert. Trying to shoot this paint would just end barrel breaks and sadness.

So on that bombshell, I’ll wrap up my first impressions.

TLDR: got new shiny toy, manhandled toy, balls too big to use shiny toy. Must wait until I get balls and air.

Looks great Cuda. Yeah the barrels don't move as much as you think. It looks way more dramatic on video and especially slow motion. In reality, it isn't much. I like those grips. They look really sharp on it. I do have a set of gray Empires with the skulls on them if you decide you want something different.

I loved my N3 when it worked. It ripped. I preferred the trigger shoe on mine and it made it shoot even faster as I think I hit the trigger more. Overall, they are lighter than they look (without the front shroud they are extremely light) and feel solid. I hope you enjoy yours. I just got tired of not being able to seem to fix issues myself and having to send it back every time I used it. But when it worked, man there was nothing like it.

Nice read so far. You spoke a bit on aesthetics. I like how the trigger frame cuts, trigger guard front & foregrip are pretty much parallel. Very pleasing to look at.

When you do get paint & air, I was wondering if you'd touch on a couple things:
-How the barrel reciprocation "feels" when shooting & how noticeable it is.
-How the foregrip feels when playing. Looks pretty small.

I did dry fire with what little air I had and don’t feel the barrel movement at all. It really doesn’t move much. I found the front grip comfy and doesn’t seem to small, and it’s size isn’t all that different than a CP reg. I’m hoping to hit the local field on Sunday, if weather and life cooperate.

I had to go with the larger bore (the gold insert) before I could get paint through it and not break every other ball. The CTRL couldn't keep up with it but wouldn't cause the chopping issues, it would just dry fire a shot every so often. I bought a rotor to try with mine but never actually used it. I would suggest going with the larger bore first and size down when you get to the field to find the right insert. Even though the red should have been large enough, it still would chop until I went with the gold. That was the one I stuck with and never looked back.

I only have two inserts, so I am limited in that regard. It makes me a little worried given they are both pretty small. I don’t know what size my local field paint is either. That’s part of the reason I am thinking about the cocker barrel adaptor. Then I have a full range on options at my disposal.

Yeah I couldn't get 3 shots through that red insert without a break, even though my IC barrel with the same size insert worked with the same paint on my emek. The cheaper alternative is just to buy the 687 or 688 insert and call it a day. But if you really want to use another barrel the AC kit is pricey but it will let you use whatever. Part of the appeal of the N3 for me was the barrel moving so I stuck with it and just bought a few inserts.

For testing that insert might work if you shoot slowly. It was when I got it up to speed that it started blending.

Hit the field today and by magic the first ball I tried fit in my 682 insert. It was, but complete fluke, the only ball that was the small, things didn’t work out. Guys at the field were excited to see it and enjoyed dryfiring. Looks like I’m going to need to put an order in with Nova. Likely get a larger single insert and the cocker barrel adaptor.

So sadly it will be a few more weeks before I can continue my review.

I have a N1, which is similar, that is my main gun. I’ve probably put 20-30k shots through it by now. Things I’ve learned

            1. Bore size is very important. Too small you break paint and too large you get rollouts, chops, and other problems. I found that the green insert (.684?) is the best so far but I’ve had to drop to the red (.679) for very small paint. Only once though and I had to go up to .684 later in the day when I started using paint from a different case.

            2. I use an old Ricochet hopper to feed it. You don’t want anything that’s aggressively pushing paint in to the breech. The barrel can clip the next ball in the stack if the balls are being pushed in to the breech. The Richochet has a taller feedneck as well which allows the balls room to pop up so they don’t get clipped.

            3. It needs “experimental college days” amount of lube

            4. I use a Ninja SLP reg on mine. I was using a Valken with 850psi initially. If I swap back to the Valken, or any other standard pressure reg, the pressure on the gun jumps from 90psi to 120psi. I’m not sure if this beneficial but it feels right .

            5. Make sure every external screw you can see on the barrel or marker is tight before playing. Barrel screws can loosen quite a bit after a day of use.

            6. The Terr Air, on the N1, trigger benefits from a very small and firm spring in-between the trigger guide and spacer. It removes all trigger play and significantly reduces trigger pull. Soon I’m going to experiment with different material compressible micro washers (cork, fiber, nylon) to see if they are better than the spring.

Technically, you have a single detent on the N3 (not on the N1) that holds the ball to help it get scooped up. I have never had a rollout with the larger insert on the N3

I 100% agree about the lower output regs. They make all the difference with consistency and shot quality on the Novas.

            #11
The N1 REALLY needs a detent. The punishment for not sizing paint throughout the day is way too harsh with this gun. I have to check every time I open a new bag and check at least 10-15 different balls. I love the gun but it’s very picky and a detent would solve all the problems I think. I wonder why it doesn’t have one?

We actually tried a detent in the marker when we first started to re-engineer it and I believe I still have one of the breeches but it always seemed to wanna chop paint so we nixed it and made the barrel sizers a lot more important. If you have an N1 it is strongly recommended that you have the entire insert kit and not just 1 or 2.

It’s not a huge difference. I’ll track down a battery and get measure the size difference. The Nova insert is snug, the freak is a little loose.

Headed over to the local field today with my new Nova inserts in tow, eager to finally fling some paint! Got any pack of less than stellar quality field paint and went about prepping the N3.

First, I need to test and check the operating pressure with the supplied gauge. You need to take the back cap off and remove a few parts, but ai had my handy Nova reference guide . It was a little bit of a struggle removing the parts, but once removed it was easy to put the pressure tester in. Adjusted the reg to about 250 using the bottom adjustment screw in the ASA and got things back together. I have a Dye Rotor set up a low as possible and headed to the range.

Over the chrono I was shooting in the 280 range, so I have happy, and emptied the hopper. I did have a break at some point, but the paint was generally crap. Regardless of the break, it absolutely rips. Light and fast trigger.

The ref at the field was quite excited to shoot the N4 as he’s seen them but never show them. He was very interesting in know about the N4 and what the point of them was. Also asked if there were batteries. He wrangled some paint and headed over to the chrono station and let it rip. He was extremely impressed by how fast it shot, especially for a mech.
