Classic MacDev Cyborg Disassembly

Just picked up this pretty minty MacDev Cyborg. I think it’s an ‘04 model. Serial number is 0612. I’ve never touched a MacDev marker before, so jumped at the chance to get it.

Local pickup from a guy that hadn’t used it in a long time. Came with original case, which isn’t even dusty. Not used to getting gear in as good of condition!

In early testing board lights up and solenoid clicks, always a good sign! But it doesn’t hold air, not surprising since it’s been sitting for a decade if not two!

So, as is my usually thing, I’m going to try to disassemble and resurrect this old beast.

Starting with the easy stuff, removing the Dye grips
first. Haven’t seen a non-yellowed pair of this in forever!


Then removing the bottom line:


And removing the HPR:



I always like checking out the boards for dates. This one is dated 2003! Make it old enough to be able to legally drink in the US!

And remove the bolt:


Then on to separating the body:

Next I’ll remove the ASA adaptor, which comes off easy enough:

Then remove the solenoid, removing the one main screw:


Above, you can see the large gasket that sits between the body and the grip frame. And below you can see the body with internal air lines.

Turning to the back of the marker, I removed the back cap cover to expose what I assuming is the ram housing.



After fiddling a bit I realized this could just be pulled out



This ram further separates into two components. This marker has a significant amount of grease that I’ve cleaned off.

Flipping back to the front of the marker, I disassembled the LPR:

Not being sure how to remove the rest of the LPR, I removed the valve retention bolt:

And now I think I need to get my blow dryer out and a strap wrench to make any further progress.

Success! My trusty blow dryer pays off yet again. Used some hockey tape to prevent marking the LPR housing:



And here is the LPR and valve for the Cyborg:

And now the last little piece of the LPR needs to be removed:


As you can see the o-rings are completely rotten.

And then finally pop out the valve:

And here’s a look at the empty body:


And when putting parts back on the body, remember to put the LPR back in before putting the ASA adaptor back as there’s a retention peg in the Adaptor.



And now the body is back together:

Next step is the Gladiator reg and the. I can add some air and see if it lives again! But that’s for another time.
