Well, I can see why the rasping is taking some time..
what you really need is a 12" long rasp to start as your stroke will be as least twice that of the short stroke file you show...
nickleson is a good file for starters... it is reasonably priced to boot...
this one is 29.99 on ebay...
There are better rasps but they run on the high end..
Your arms will appreciate the longer stroke and it will cut your time by half or more...

Well, I cant afford a longer rasp yet, but I took your advice and worked out flat spots, followed the buttstock lines and worked out, and im taking longer flst strokes with my file with no handle.

The results are much improved.

Itll still take me a long time, but oh well, it gives me content to post.

Do you have an angle grinder? A sanding disc on it can move some material pretty quickly. It's easy to control as well. That's how I take away the bulk of material when I'm shaping wood, then move to files.

I do have one! Im afraid Ill take too much off with one but I may cave and just do it.


I also have a cheap harbor freight bench top belt sander im tempted to try also.

I thought part of the novelty of the walz challenge was to use hand tools though.

Looking good so far! If you’re looking to save a little elbow grease, the 15 3/4” Stanley surform is affordable and eats wood well. I used to use them for roughing archery bows out of hickory and oak.

Man, I need better files. Here is where she is as of today. I gotta take a break. I dunno how you do it walz.

Getting closer for sure, but I think I need my trigger assembly done up so I can figure out exactly how to shape the grip.

The stock is a hair short for me but Im tempted to make a butt plate and use brass stand offs to make look like an adjustable stock. Im also contemplating taking the horn of the grip off, but that only makes the need for a longer stock worse.

when your ready I'll make you a trigger guard from i piece of old barrel tube... I'll even post up a how-to...

Well, I don't get much time during the week to mess with this, but tonight I spent about 30 minutes sanding the butt stock as I'm pretty sure that part isn't changing a whole lot. I really wanted to get a preview of the grain in this beast as I haven't seen much as I carved layers back.

I took some 220 grit to the grip and some stock area until it looked smooth, and I wiped the area with a damp rag.


Oh yeah baby.


Ill be Contouring the grip a lot more, and im going to take more meat off of the fore grip.

How about a little mid day update?!? i wanna start by saying Im sorry as this will be a really hectic project. I have no clue as to what its going to be when Im done. Im making decisions on the fly, and working on details in no particular logical order.

That being said, I was avoiding attempting to lever this beast as the grip profile meant Im making something from scratch. I also wasnt sure if Id be able to make something that wasn't gangly. plus the tac 50 style stock is almost always a bolt in real steel applications, so it makes sense to bolt this. Then I told myself, this is MCB here, so I need to get weird.

Plus all this recent talk about levers has me all hot and bothered. so why not figure out how to make them myself?

Last night I laid the stock on a piece of paper and traced the grip profile.

I then transfered that onto some cardboard, and went to bed.

Today, I came to work, we are slow, so I asked the boss if I could to a little G work and stay off the clock. He approved.

I can't really finish this until I marry more parts together, but heres my concept lever. I still may cave and make it a bolt action, but my plan is to make it a functional wrist roller lever as of now.
