My New Sterling STP from Australia

So over on another thread we were talking about where to get a new Sterling and the shop Paintballshop.com was brought up since they seem to have significant stock. Some of us Americans took the gamble and amazingly the stuff showed up.

Why import a UK-made gun from a place four times as far away as the UK? Well, if you’d ever tried to deal with Sterling (Arrow Precision) you’d know that as soon as they find out you're American they stop any communication with you. This has happened to lots of people here, I’ve bothered to go through this twice now,

”Hi, do you still sell the Sterling paintball gun or any parts?”

”We are PROUD to be the exclusive seller of the Rolls Royce of pump paintball guns and parts, the Sterling!

”OK, I’m in the US, can you send me like 50 rebuild kits and ten guns?”

    [crickets]

So that’s why this gun came from Australia…ok, enough back story.

My Sterling arrived yesterday after eight days of travel. EMS rules.

The gun looks amazing. I’ve only ever owned OG Sterlings so this was a big change for me. Almost no parts are the same, maybe the bolt? Pretty much everything is different. The grip isn’t (obviously) borrowed from some place else. The velocity is adjustable, and that means different pump handle, pump rod, hammer, etc. The barrel is spider threaded and THICK enough to roll out cookies with. Pump action is smoother and lighter than my OGs. The vertical feed and the way it attaches are also new to me.

After airing it up it leaked, of course. This reminded me of some things Turbowagonman said about later Sterlings having frustrating quality control issues. I guess I should have stripped the whole thing down first, but I assumed it was oiled because I did pull the bolt and that looked like it had been literally dipped in oil it was so lubricated. Upon disassembly the issue was that the valve wasn’t actually threaded in all the way…nice…it was also bone dry in there.

Before I heard the leak though I discovered another issue, that the trigger was adjusted so tight that it was essentially in all autotrigger all the time mode. I backed the stop off quite a bit and that issue went away.

It’s obvious they don’t test fire these before shipping them…like Rolls Royce would…just saying…

The sticker says “Made in The United Kingdom”. Anyone who’s seen The IT Crowd may laugh at that. I used to work for Lotus. I’ve been a Doctor Who fan for 40 years. I can roll with effed up Anglo stuff that isn’t all there. Being a fan of British things and an understanding person when it comes to hand made stuff I don’t have any genuine complaints about shipping %99 assembled guns, but I do feel I have to mention that. If you expect the gun to be…you know, done, it may not be. This is an enthusiasts gun, IMO, since you have to fix it out of the box. Lots of great guns have to be fixed right out of the box though, honestly.

I think it’s fair to say though that I don’t think the person who made all the parts for this gun ever met the person who did the final assembly. And this makes me wonder how many offshore parts are in this Made in UK gun…I wish I knew anything about this company at all but as I said the guys won’t talk. The grip is Hogue so we know at least that was made in a place with worker protections and such but for all I know the rest is a great deal from Taiwan slapped together by a English school kid. There is no Mike Cassidy of Sterling, if you know what I mean, to explain this stuff to us.

So after the fixing I was able to hit 300fps, turned it down to 284 bps. Velocity wasn’t super consistent but I don’t think it’s fair to bring that up at this moment because I’ve only shot junk paint through it with the electrical tape detent system.

BTW, the barrel is awesome because it’s so thick it’s basically flush with the block. I do wish it had some porting or at least a more well rounded opening. It’s loud as $&@?, which I like, but I’m not so sure how accurate it will be once I start caring. It’s a little shorter than OG Sterling barrels and has no brass liner.

I LOVE THIS GUN. It’s golden and special and it pumps very smooth and it’s even rather light, much lighter than Sniper.

Attached are pics from a late night shooting and swearing session with Mr Crystal Cut himself, Gold Lightan. You can see he loves the color but hears a leak from somewhere…

You are the second person I have heard about having to tinker with the marker right out of the box. Mine worked perfect out of the box, but I did have to disassemble it to clear out a bunch of thread locker type gunk blocking the velocity adjuster rod from reaching the hammer.

Also, I don't think it is just the fact that we are American's that they don't want to talk to us. I have heard the same thing from Brits and the contact at Paintballshop. What I get the feeling of is they don't care about selling markers or parts, they only care about selling their paint.

Gorgeous marker, I hope to see some shooting and playing videos with it!

And after the price conversion, not bad. Although I haven't seen what shipping is. They have quite the selection of Sterlings and spare parts. Very cool.

EMS from Oz is about $71 now, which is like $50USD. Not cheap, but very fast and reliable.

$50 for 8 days from that far away for a niche marker, not bad at all.

Keep in mind too the Australian Dollar has been in steady decline. So these markers are getting cheaper by the day.

They’re basically giving them away. I may start watching the AUD and if it goes down more buy a second Sterling.

Yeah, my total bill in AUD was $670.20 which on that day in USD was $457.10.

I ordered a SC feed for the STP I already had and it came quickly. It’s nice to know you can still get parts for them.

They offer them freak bore for a lil more it’s in the drop down. Brian got his done they did a good job to.

I bought a gold SC Sterling and had the exact same autotrigger problem. I adjusted the stop and it’s all good now. Mine didn’t leak out of the box but it did have the thickest nastiest grease on everything in the lower tube. I cleaned it all off when I was adjusting the trigger and put PE grease on it.

I agree that the barrel is loud and thick. Some porting would be nice. I opted for the freak bore figuring that the bore was probably going to be to large to be usable. I have a Spyder threaded freak barrel that I’ll most likely use.

I was surprised how light it is. I figured it would be heavier since it is stacked. It points nice and the pump stroke rivals my CCM.

Ha! My lower tube was bone dry…they gave you my grease!

Whoever redesigned the Sterling from the OG to this STP cared a lot more about the gun than whoever is in charge of the brand now. The original guns are nice in operation thanks to the terrific basic design (half Nelson half Sheridan) but the STP polishes it up just a little more…maybe even a lot more. With nobody to copy (as far as I know) they evolved their design to a MkII…and then let them all fall off the back of a truck basically…strange.

If I could change anything it would be to omit the milling on the block. It has a Walmart Spyder vibe. I can also for sure see some people preferring the old really really round handle pump to this one which is a little sharp. If the barrel wasn’t so charismatically thick I’d be upset that the opening isn’t smoothed out more. I guess CCI’s fantastic barrels have spoiled me.

Last night I did some more testing, shot about 250 rnds.

I’m rather fast at auto triggering and I was able to get the velocity to spike on a 9oz tank of CO2. I did, let’s say, a sustain burst of 20 shots with a five second break and then another 20 shots. Velocity spikes to 315 but was back to normal after a shot or two. Maybe the bottom line configuration could be improved to reduce what seems like a liquid CO2 in the gun problem. I rarely shoot that fast for that long…but I will as much as possible with this gun because it’s probably the fastest gun I have. I hope to play with this in a few weeks but I’ll be on HPA so this velocity thing won’t be an issue.

I used to run mine with a bottomline Stabilizer.

I neglected to mention I also shredded the front o-ring last night which jammed the bolt. This probably had something to do with the bolt being gooey with oil when I got it. I cleaned all the thick stuff out, replaced the o-ring, and used a light amount of normal oil. If I happens again I’ll remove the wire detent which drags across this o-ring. If it fails again I’ll try just leaving it out.

Can we get some more full pictures of the marker? I enjoy Mr. Crystal Cut as well. And if you happen to be taking it apart anyways, be great to see the internals.

I love that gold color. Looked at the website, that's the best one, but it's sold out now.
