    MCS hdx "shotgun"

First off, love how they are calling this a shotgun when it does nothing that any pump doesn't already

Who on earth is buying this thing though? It takes 3ish minutes to load co2 and paint into it, you need tools for each step and you only get 16 shots?

How is MCS still making money when apparently nobody will stand up in the design meeting and say "hey, this seems like a bad idea"

I think the worst part is that they have designs that are almost a good idea for paintball, but not quite. Remember that their market is primarily home defense and paintball is sort of a half assed afterthought. I love my MCS coach gun, but without forum members figuring out velocity tweaks it would be nearly useless.

      Your what?

Even as home defence though, you still have to smack the butt stock to get it to pierce. "HEY I'M RIGHT HERE!! Kindly hold still while I get ready to shoot something at you"

Tasers, stun guns and mace are all better solutions to the same problem if you ask me

Oh wait the coach gun is Umarex, but my point remains.

The smack the bottom to pierce the CO2 is an important part of the Home Defense aspect. The gun can remain loaded with the CO2 in place, in storage. The CO2 doesn't leak out while sitting waiting to be used. Then, when needed, Smack, rack and shoot.

Cob I get that part, but smacking it isn't the only way you can accomplish that. TIPX does it on the first trigger pull. No need to alert someone by smacking it. And as I just found out with the tr50, the first smack doesn't always do it anyway. Hell the ancient Sheridan PGP does it on the first round fired. Granted it's usually low velocity because of it but I'm not sure what all these companies fascinations with smacking the 12g are. Especially here, you are trying to pierce 2 at the same time

I love the feel of the HDX. I used mine at the last stock event and it was a blast. i just removed the spring and follower and poured the paint in from the front. I have since modified it with a speed feed gate from a Phantom (holds 24 rds) and a bottomline asa.

As Jonny said these are not designed for paintball, but home defense. pre loaded with 16rds of hard plastic ammo and 12 grams un pierced, you can quickly slam the back and be shooting 400 fps(with restrictor removed).

Of course with no spring feed, you need to roll the gun over as you cock it so the ball can feed from underneath. It is a blast to play with!

So I guess I have to ask then, why did you buy it? You essentially had to modify it just to make it functional.

Is it the look? What is it that said to you, I want this thing over pretty much every other pump out there

I think it is more of a "I want this as well as that" thing around here.

I bought it because it was different. And yes, it's fun. For me, Old, Slow and Decrepit, 16 rounds are usually plenty for a game. I often use bolt action, single shot, or revolvers in games. Other Expandable members heckle me. when they see I have reloaded during a game.

Why did i buy the 154 other guns I have. I love the feel of pump action, specially nelsons. This has a true shotgun feel. I wouldn't recommend it to the average player, as it has been stated Umarex guns ARE NOT paintball guns, you have to get them expecting to mod them, its part of the fun. The sound it makes when you cock it makes me giggle.

See this is what paintball means to me after 15 years, use the gun that looks, sounds, or feels best, if you need more than a few to match your changing moods that's just fine and reasonable, variety is the spice of life.

This is the part that would infuriate me. I don't feel the need to fix factory problems. If you (as a company) are going to sell a marker to be used in paintball, do enough research to make it something the players don't have to fix out of the box just to make it useable on the field. I really see no reason tools should be needed to reload it, even for use as self defense

Why care, though? Just don't buy it.
Variety is the spice of life. I bet this is super ridiculous fun to play with.

Not planning on it. It's not my cup of tea but as much as it's not, I do like interesting concepts. I actually like how this thing loads paint up from the lower tube and how it has 12g in the stock, but while neat concepts I think both are let down by design choices mainly revolving around reloading.

See, I think modding shit is fun. I have real markers I can play with while I tinker with my projects. I have one of Umarex's .43cal pistols. The magazines are expensive. .43cal sucks for ANYTHING except up close shooting (which makes it pretty ok in a pistol). Etc, etc. But the slide recock is JUST SO SATISFYING. It's totally a gimmick, but I love the feel of it. I love it so much that I don't even mind wasting 10 shots out of my 12g to get down to velocity.

Watching the Defcon review of these things is hilarious. They clearly have some sort of endorsement deal with MCS, the dude just oozes fake enthusiasm over what are clearly design choices made by people who have never actually played paintball (yes it’s a great idea to require not one but two tiny, extremely losable tools just to reload paint/CO2 that live inside the marker when you aren’t using them, also you have to basically field strip the thing when you run out of air).

I’m still a bit salty that in a previous review that same guy ragged on the BT SA-17 for being large and heavy (but he apparently doesn’t mind the HDX being multiple times that), despite the SA-17 (which wasn’t without its own faults too) still being a very functional and versatile marker, while this thing is clearly neither. But it just goes to show that paintball “reviews” done by companies are almost always advertising, which doesn’t take a genius to figure out anyway. Still annoys me a bit though.

THAT BEING SAID, people should enjoy what they enjoy. If this big dumb chonker of a marker brings you joy, then rock on. It isn’t my cup of tea, but what’s in my cup may not be in yours anyway (hint: my cup is full of dr mcgillicuddy’s).

I do think it’s kinda hilarious, but hey at least you know what you’re getting going into it. But I think we can all agree, this is pretty objectively a bad marker. Whether it’s good at being fun, I can’t say.

I can say that I would lose both those little tools in the first five minutes of a game, and get very frustrated when I got shot out kneeling in the dirt with the thing in pieces around me trying to put fresh 12grams in. But also I suck at paintball.

EDIT: Actually, taking another look at them there is one aspect of these markers I have a huge problem with. In what appears to be an attempt to imitate real military shotguns, the muzzle brake looks like it’s made in a sharp, multi-pointed design. That has absolutely no place in paintball, and I would refuse to play in a game with anyone who had anything even remotely sharp sticking off the end of their marker. In a sport where barrel tags are commonplace, and accidental collisions can happen at any time, I’m shocked that MCS would think it’s a good idea to put anything even vaguely pointy on the end of a marker. If I was a field owner I would absolutely bar anyone from ever using any muzzle brake like this, and I think this is a clear example of the line where milsim can go too far in this sport. This alone is enough for me to say shame on MCS for producing it. And if even one person gets hurt because of it, they should be held at fault.

EDIT EDIT: And if the rationale is that
this is an ok feature for it to have because it’s intended to be a home defense weapon instead of a paintball marker, then it should be strictly marketed as such and not have cross promotion with Defcon who are marketing it only as a paintball marker, nor be listed on the MCS website as the “T4E HDX .68 Caliber Paintball Pump Action Shotgun.”

Paintballs hurt enough. We don’t need extra things that can hurt people out on the field.
