Is there really a difference between AC bolts?

    Hello again experts,

Just wondering if there is really a difference between a standard WGP bolt, versus something like a shocktech or inception bolt? I know weight factors, but besides that what benefits would I get out of an aftermarket bolt.

Pardon my grammar and thank you for viewing

Swap bolts at the chrono station and see for yourself, velocity change = there are differences

I have no fancy shmancy bolts. Just wondering if I should get a Delrin bolt or not.

    Is there a difference? Yes

Which is better? Only ask that question if you are willing to open Pandora's box, a can of worms and a barrel of monkeys at the same time.

I think the venturi bolts tend to be quieter. Delrin with out o-rings tend to slide a bit easier and reduce cocking pressure or smooth out a pump stroke. O-rings tend to help reduce blowback up the feed tube. Ball detent groove smooths out a pump stroke. Smooth flow path helps efficiency (see chrony test listed in previous post). Lighter weight reduces "kick."

What are you looking to gain? There may be a bolt out there that has what you are looking for.

Yes.... And that ans bolt is trash for a frequently used maker. They wobble to much and score your breach and damage your back block

Of the three you got. I dont think youll see much difference. They all have o rings, so drag will be similar.

To me, the difference comes when comparing o ring bolts vs non o ring bolts. It comes down to cycle smoothness vs efficiency. There a non o ring bolt, especially a delrin one will slide easier, offering a smooth pump stroke. This can lead to lighter lpr pressure in a mech, and or smoother pump stroke on a sniper build. I'll take the added drag for o rings on my bolts. It's just personal preference.

The same set of o-rings will feel different in your breech depending on the bolt, not all bolts are the same size (with or without o-rings).

kingman being kingman had some funky combinations over the years as well.

              full delrin without o-rings
              full delrin with o-rings
half aluminum, half delrin without o-rings
half aluminum, half delrin with o-rings.
full delrin without o-rings but with a spring.
and then almost each of these combination could be had with our without venturi's.

most of these were stock but some were aftermarket

i think it comes down to marketing and what people will buy as well as physical differences with theoretical effects.
you can have the best bolt in the world but if the paint is jacked, none of it matters.

As k_obeastly pointed out, on my autocockers and snipers a venturi face is noticeably quieter.

You can try chrono swapping them to see which is more efficient but as I understand it this only tells part of the story regarding efficiency

Angry paintball did a live feed recently where he had a couple bolts, I know one was a modified shocktech bolt that he added an extra oring to, but the other bolts I can't recall what they were but there was a noticeable FPS difference between them all. I'll look for the video and post a link

I think alot of that had to do with the actual bolt fit to the bore. It is much easier to control the fit when your cutting the bolt for the specific marker than producing for all markers. Perfect example is inception includes multiple orings in their kit so that the fit can be adjusted.

There are differences, absolutely. Everyone with a lathe in the late 90s was making some sort of special bolt. They all had to be different. There must be 200 of them.

Does it matter at all? No. Unless someone screwed something up really bad they’re all the same. They will produce a difference in velocity at the chrono because they have difference amounts of restriction but assuming you’re doing to adjust the final velocity by additional means that difference is meaningless.

The largest meaningful difference would be reliability and feel. Some shrewd o-rings more than others. The delrin ones glide nice…but so does a well broken in stock WGP bolt.

Look at a CCM bolt. That’s as nuts as anything needs to be.

Angry Paintball has done countless tests on bolts and tbh the only real big difference is seen with his modded shocktech bolts other then that they all are kinda the same once you go aftermarket

I've recently been doing some bolt testing in my sniper. As many have said here, o-rings definitely help. A tight fitting bolt with 3 o-rings seems to yield the highest velocity/fps. Recently I compared a CCM bolt (no o-rings/loose fit) to an Angry O-ring modded bolt and there was a 50-60fps difference between the two. Yes the pump stroked was smoother with the CCM bolt but I'll personally take the performance bump.

I'll be making a video comparing a handful of bolts in the nest few weeks.

Honestly surprised how level headed the discussion has been so far. Normally by now someone gets butt hurt because their bias opinion was challenged

I just breathe through them. If there's any restriction it's not efficient. If my breath passes through with no restrictions at all, the flow has to be good enough.

Realistically, the anti-chop bolt makes a difference. It's saved me from a few chops. Sure, sometimes the ball is pinched so I have to take off the barrel and hopper in game (happened once), but at least I'm not having to clean everything

Someone who likes a Jam Bolt? God I can remember being ridiculed for trying one out on a Sniper II once. So I converted all of my cockers/snipers to Jam Bolts just to piss them off. Sadly don't have any anymore they were all sold or sold with my cockers when I dumped them.

Every bolt I make for my R/T kits run them, and have for years. Since it's fast shooting and blind, it saves me from chops, esp near the end of a loader. They work extremely well when done right. The problems that the old jam bolts had was that they weren't sprung heavy enough (bolt could bounce when pressure traveled through it----I've seen it on high speed cameras), and that they didn't address the clipping of the ball stack. Mine use a cure type of ramp on the tip, and a heavier spring. I don't get many chops for those exact reasons.
