Original vs O-ring TPC

If i understand correctly, the o-ring TPC basically replaces the need to use the nylon set screw?

Is there much difference between the two? I always thought I should prefer the o-ring TPC.

I like the o-ring.

It's not like the Nylon screw was a bad system, but you did have to set it just right so the TPC wouldn't back out, but you could still adjust the velocity. As I recall, I had it loosen up on me once or twice.

The o-ring just works. Install, set your velocity, you don't have to do anything else and it's not gonna move.

You can also modify a stock TPC to take an o-ring using basic power tools. I modified the TPC in my son’s Phantom using a Dremel and a drill. I just chucked the part into the drill, spun it up like a lathe, and cut the groove with a cutting wheel a little at a time until it was the right depth.

The original version nylon nut has a little more tendency to loosen up and a good tendency to get stuck. One phantom I worked on, the nut seemed loose and when I attempted to tighten it, it stripped and I had to drill it out. O-ring just keeps things simple. Just don't remove the nylon nut, back it out of the thread area and all is good. If you remove it, sometimes the o-ring will bind in the hole and rip. Had that happen on one of the original ASP ones I got.

Just to help back up what’s already been said; the oring’d TPC is trouble free with no risk of moving. I’ve had all the same issues with the set screw though, loosening up or getting stuck in the bolt and rounding out.

The problem with the nylon set screw is people don’t use it properly. You remove the TPC thread the nylon screw so it just barely enters the bore threads. Then you install the TPC. It should cut into the nylon screw creating resistance. If you just try and tighten it, the nylon screw will strip out before you get it even remotely tight. It will also not keep the TPC from moving around creating velocity fluctuations. If the nylon screw is used properly it works really well. Simon at inception is the one that taught me this when I asked about one of his designs that used this type of locking method.

TPC with the oring dose the same thing without the extra step. Both will do the job just fine there is no performance difference between the two. So if you know this it will save you the $16.99+ shipping.

You can buy a bag of nylon grub screws from any hardware store for like a $1 if yours is stripped out already.

Chuck pretty much nailed it. Personally I prefer the oring version, but mainly because I run two bolt actions where the bolt Handle mounts in the set screw hole.

I definitely prefer the oring TPC all of the newer phantoms have the with the oring but there is no need to replace a good TPC with the new style if you know how to set the grub screw on older phantoms. Only time I have replaced a TPC is when I got one in that had the face cut off it to “increase efficiency”.

Just want to second the importance of setting it correctly. If you follow those directions, it works flawlessly. But it's still extra work compared to the o-ring.

My original phantom had neither ... a drop of soft set Loctite ... It stayed soft to adjust it, but never moved on its own.
