I see people doing wedgets but why not modding to use wire detents on Sheridan PGPs?

Detents and wedgits are two different things.
A detent keeps a ball from rolling out of the breech when the bolt is open. A wedgit (or tighter bore) keeps the ball from rolling out of place when it's chambered.
There's the presumption that if a single point of contact- like a detent- is used to hold the ball in the breech, that could cause the ball to roll in that direction. The old Galactic-Z Automag bodies tried to do that intentionally, sort of a proto-Tippmann-Flatline.
The idea is that wedgits, being evenly spaced, don't cause that sort of thing. They're also seen as more tolerant of paint variations than a single tight bore.
Finally, as far as a wire detent goes, if you were using it to hold the ball in the chamber, that'd be a big gas-wasting hole in the breech. Something like wedgits or a tight bore are sealed.

i have noticed that s6 style ccm detents are mounted with the 'finger' coming through a slot so that it is able to fold out of the way when the ball passes over it.
i setup a pgp with one, cut the same slot, and have noticed zero "flatline" effect. the ball flys straight, as if the detent was not there, but rollouts are 100% eliminated

I havent noticed any curve effect with any of the detent mods Ive done, whether with an autococker detent or a PE rubber nub. Ive yet to hear anything from anyone who Ive done them for other than it stops the rollout. The ASP detents are also off-center and dont cause issues in the Phantoms either.

I guess I am referring to people putting dimples in the body of a pgp to prevent rollout. Was wondering why people wouldn't use a wire detent opposed to the dimples aside from less work. I saw a bacci video where he made a quick strip bolt so don't see how it is more difficult than that. Was just curious.

Gotcha. Doc. So, aside from loss of gas which I imagine is already present through blow by with the size of the breach vs modern paint, a detent, in theory can cause rotation as it travels and potentially loss of accuracy?

Yes, that is correct, if you look up the old Automag Galactic Z body (I think warpig has a write up on it) it had essentially an adjustable membrane detent in the breach. The more detent you had pushing into the ball the more the ball would spin. They put the detent on the top to give the ball back spin to increase shot distance. Most detents are on the side of the body, which would give the ball curve to that side.

You did get me thinking though.. what if.. hear me out.. someone milled two shallow slots down each side of the bolt. Then fabricate little detents that affixed to the bolt. The front bolt oring could hold them in place. They would ride back with the bolt, and if profiled properly, would allow a ball to drop between them. Then racking the bolt forward the ball could ride between them and be held til the shot occurred.

I used some fishing line.
I removed the bolt o-ring, drilled a small hole in the bolt face. Knotted fishing line there stretching forward with a kink in it so it would cradle the ball as it fell in.
Replaced the bolt oring after.

Yeah screw those guys.... Oh, it's detent mods, not detest mods. Moving along....I am the admin...

Some are using CCM detent covers for like the S6 to add finger detents to theres with great success. Looks clean to especially if you can find the brass covers.
I have seen some modified cocker ball detents in them as well.
My PGP build is setup with a freak bore so I don’t need it for what I use it for especially with the mods I’m running.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. Adding some cocker wire detents. Seems straight forward and simple enough. A lot of markers have single detents so not sure how much rotation or spin you'd really be getting. And as I said, with the size of old breaches/ barrels vs new paint you are already losing gas down the barrel from blow by. So I see maybe some velocity adjustment, not like once it is cocked it is taking anymore gas.

No no, you bring up a good point and I think there's room to talk about both subjects here.Originally posted by Painthappy View PostYeah screw those guys.... Oh, it's detent mods, not detest mods. Moving along....
I suppose you could fab an extra long wire detent that has two sections that go into the breach. One in the normal spot and one further forward to act as a ball in place detent
Not that I think of it though, that second one you would lose gas through when firing

Chuck E Ducky
I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED
lol
i recently modded two of my pgps for spyder style detents.
as ive commented above, i cut slots so the 'finger' is able to fold out of the way when a ball is shot past it.
the flatline/galactic z/airsoft hop up effect doesnt happen on these. not sure if it was completely necessary as i never tested the detents with just a hole instead of the slot.
and also like i said above, ive had zero drop in fps, efficiency or shot quality
10/10 will always recommend

I did think of spyder nubs too. Seems as long as they retract when the ball passes.Originally posted by $L!mBo View PostChuck E Ducky

How does the freak bore work? That would be ideal to me.Originally posted by Chuck E Ducky View PostSome are using CCM detent covers for like the S6 to add finger detents to theres with great success. Looks clean to especially if you can find the brass covers.

Basically you send your marker to JeeperCreeper and he makes Magic happen.
His build thread.

The one he built for me. Lots of options from clip on feeds and custom speed feed gates to freak standard/XL he can add detents and modify it for different bolts like mine is a center fire speed demon bolt it’s a lil longer so the breach it’s moved forward and cut to feed First strikes if I want. He can work the valve and body for better efficiency. He even made a bolt less one. This one was built for quick draw and single shot play. It’s one of my best shooters.

That brass cover is exactly what I am after, I think. Where would I find one of those?Originally posted by $L!mBo View PostChuck E Ducky

Think you could mod thoes eye hole patch kits ACP sells?
-
just checked those out.
i think by the time i got the tooling together to make those work, probably not worth it compared to modding the s6 covers
but they look very similar, acp might be smaller
i bet if enough of us bother him, Bill
Holstein would get ccm do another run of brass covers
