Build co-ops were actually fairly common (at least in Atlantic Canada) 20-40 years ago. Sadly they have kind of gone by the way side, and seem to have been replaced by contractors trying to put as little time, effort, and money into their developments as they can.

But they are really a good idea, and I'm considering spearheading one in the near future as an eco-friendly community building project.
