You guys might get a kick out of this. Today it was just about dinner time and the can opener broke so whats a machinist to do. Go to the store and spend 10 bucks on a piece of crap that will only work a couple times. No he goes back out to the shop with the broken can opener and makes a new damn handle before things start to get cold.

HSMXpress, recent Solidworks version. I think I am done generating a 2d pocket task. I have filled out everything that looks like I need to and am not getting any warnings. It will not generate a toolpath though. The red 'X's seem to say that something is wrong, but it isn't really helping beyond that.

Any guesses?

Oh, and I should explain how I'm trying to generate the toolpath. I am right clicking on the '-'d '2D pocket' icon and it does nothing when I pick generate toolpath. Same when I click on the 'X'd 'none icon.

Check you tool size and pocket size vs your ramp diameter. I have had that problem before where everything "looks" good but if you wanted to pocket say a 3/8 hole with a 1/4 em. It might want to ramp with a 1/4 in rad helix entry that would give you a min hole of 1/2 and that would cause an error.

Well there is something in there that it doesn't like. I did a second job which is to just machine two small bores with the same tool setup and that generated no problem. Got to watch it get simulated which is pretty exciting. It doesn't tell me that the shoulder of the mill will crash (the pocket is deeper than the depth of cut and the tool I used to test has a shoulder) so I will have to keep an eye out for crashing unless there is a button to have it check for that.

I might need to figure out how to change the UCS a touch more in the CAM tab. My Z is fine, but my X and Y are flipped. Might not matter on this part, but will run out of travel on another part.

Also, I figured out why I couldn't select the tool holder I had created. This is from a page or two ago. Turns out that you create the holder, but then go into a tool profile and pick which holder you want. I was almost there, now it looks just right.

Progress is good, just need to tackle this next bigger bite.

EDIT: I think I got it, but something else is off. I was changing things one at a time and when I changed it so that it would allow stepover cusps, it auto-generated the toolpath. The new problem is that the Z never goes below zero.

It may be time to start a HSMExpress/HSMWorks help thread

Look at the heights tab and determine if the "top" of the model or stock is 0. Then determine if the setup will not allow you to go into negative number for a Z move. I can't remember exactly where I was this, but I know I did.
