Merlin Valve Question
Figured this was the place. My understanding was that Merlins bottom tube is just a straight tube correct? 11/16th? (Not tapered smaller in the valve area like a standard cocker) If this is right how is the valve kept in the lower tube? Just a lug set screw or does it still have a valve retaining nut?

thats correct, and yes, just the lug screw from underneath.

That's correct. The standard valve setup just seems unnecessarily complicated. Merlins are much easier to break down and clean by comparison.

One more question, how is the front valve spring held in with no meat of the body left? Is the front block screw extended so the spring can rest against it?

My friend just bought it. I would have stole it for a couple games last saturday if it wasn't leaking from the front block.. Next time we play, I hope.
The black merlin I received a couple weeks ago has a long spyder valve spring in there and no spacer. The big end of the spyder spring fits right in the banjo bolt where the spacer sleeve should be. I don't think I'll leave it like that though. http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/...M/DSCF0420.jpg

I figured that's how they did it. Thanks again everyone! My Bonebrake cocker does something similar but it uses a standard cocker valve spring and just has a plunger type thing attached to the front screw.

About the longer spring in my merlin, Jared told me:
"Those were special springs. AKA had 100 made. They later decided to put in a spacer so they could use the normal springs."

Interesting, my Merlin was sprung with the spyder type when I got it also. Could be a way to date when they were built.
The front block orings were more of a problem than anything else with the valve for me. Trying to get them on the front block screw while getting the front block secured was a little tricky.
