It has been done just like you are probably trying to do. I can't get pictures and I didn't do it, but I have seen pictures of an Empire Trracer with that mod.

I've always wondered if there isn't some cheating going on and if some of the holes / fittings / plugs used aren't actually NPS. Some just don't seem to have much taper.

There is very little taper in NPT threads but it is there. Its hard to see unless your used to looking for subtle differences in things. I deal with machining tolerances in the +-.0005" range so i can see very small size variations pretty easily. I would not want to try to pit a normal thread into a NPT hole, it would not work out very well and would likely ruin both pieces. There is only like. 020" taper in the 1/8" NPT taps i have which is like 4x the thickness of a piece of paper.
