Question about pumps...

I am newer to the pump scene and am looking for a marker. I currently have a trilly converted to a pump. It works but I want a better gun. I have seen a Maverick on a local classifieds site. Is it an ok gun or should I just save up and get one of the phantoms I see for about $100? I'm not sure if I want to go stock class or open class yet...

Fan of EMR
The Maverick isn't going to be any better than your Trilly in my opinion. Hold out for the Phantom

Stock class = 12grams and a stick feed. End discussion.

Honestly, Ye Olde Phantom is pretty hard to beat for the money.

One thing to consider is "Community" - how many people own them, how much knowledge is out there for the gun, and what is the availability of repair and upgrade parts.

Aftermarket barrels
are available for the Phantom (Maverick barrels are pretty rare)
You can buy new breeches from CCI to change the gun from "Stock" to "Open" (L/H or R/H feed).

Also, the Phantom has been in production since 1988 - there are a lot of people out there with knowledge on this gun who will be willing to answer every question you have.

Save the pennies.

What's already been said many times - the Phantom is the perfect platform to customize to suit your playing style. OC/SC/Hybrid - you name it you can do it. So many different configurations can be had - just browse through some of the pictures in the photo thread - will give you an idea what people are doing with them!

how big of a hopper do you normally run? phantom's balance in my opinion feels really odd with anything larger than a 50 round hopper since it is so light. the pump stroke is also heavier than a sniper, but may be similar to your trilogy if you still have the stock springs.

out of the maverick and phantom, i would go with the phantom as parts are still being made for it.

You could also go with the Empire Trracer. Both open and stock class (with the spring feed), and it also has auto trigger.

I've never had a problem with it, and it's around the 100$ range.

Good point - and it can use First Strikes, and accepts 'Cocker-threaded barrels (so finding a good barrel is no problem)

The downside is that it's ugly as sin...

That is very true. I wish the pump handle has aftermarket replacements.

Spyder's new Hammer might also be a choice. If you want mag feed. They should also be releasing a stock class feed in the future. I think I'd prefer the center feed to the Traccers right feed.

Your trilly is open class
Your trilly is heavy

A phantom is crazy light
Stock class may drive you insane

I would suggest buying an empire sniper, or another cocker style pump (somethin with a reg, clamping feed, maybe at)

Phantoms are great guns
But muscle memory of your heavy oc trilly won't apply

You could always upgrade your trilly
Some of mine now shoot +/-2 and are great little guns
