When I was looking to do this a year or so ago. Someone here said that Van's Instant Gun Blue was a good product for Brass. I have NOT tried this product and don't know for myself, but after a couple of weeks of searching this is what I came up with.

I later decided not to do it at all and let the gun go natural.

Brass black by Birchwood Casey it takes lot of work but a proper finish can be attained. It will take about a week of 2 coats a day warm the brass until it is almost to hot to touch then apply the blacking agent. ( follow the directions and use SS wool XXXX in between coats)

Do you know if this comes out any more durable than the finish on the original PMI's and Sheridans?
