you can change the color of steel by tempering it.

Hm. From what I'm gathering here, it may be possible to achieve an aurora-like effect with a Minimag body.(?)

I just use the urine itself for oxidizing barrels.

I've got an old Belgium Browning 12 guage, and it's got such a nice finish now that I use it to check the depth of streams when I'm out duckhunting. It's durable, looks good, and protects your gun for life (and then some).

Right, but is there a reason simple ammonia (dilute or regular) won't work? Or do you just happen to like the cow urine

It can be done to steel. Take a look. This is dust finish. It would look cool as a high polished finished though.

I am currently trying to have a mag body plated like that.

Your best bet would be to try and contact the people who do this type of finish for knives.

Aren't mag bodies simple stainless steel? Heat the "cow piss" out of it like stainless headers/pipes on cars and motorcycles. Those have a beautiful rainbow effect.

I used cow urine on the Hawken because that's the traditional method (dating back years and years) and I wanted it to be authentic. I know ammonia would oxidize it, but I'm not sure it would achieve the same unique effects.

People-urine works too... It's not as acidic though

Hey, could you post pics of your barrel? I'm curious of exactly what kind of effects cow urine might have on a Minimag body I may or may not get before I dunk it in cow pee.
