Erratic velocity

Hi guys, I have a new to me Phantom and am getting ready to go use it this weekend. I ran it over the chrono a little today and while it would shoot right around 280 most of the time, there were shots that would just drop to 240, or 250 at random, then right back around 280. I was using new high end paint that seemed to size out right around .682 and even tried some old .679 paint with very similar results. I tried this with both 12gr. And CA. I have polished internals and have used a small ammonut of Dow 33 to lube the internals.

If I were a bettin man, I'd say the likely cause of your velocity spikes is this...

I experienced similar issues for years with my first couple phantoms and then my Redux... when I stopped lubing up the bolt and hammer, it stopped... but that could've just been a fluke Whatever you do, never put any lube on the bolt, and only a drop of oil spread evenly on the hammer should be necessary.

Hope that helps man!

Short beat me to it, but yeah..you don't need to really lube anything. 1 drop of oil on the hammer, don't really need to put anything on the bolt.

Make sure to clean out the body to get any remnants of that stuff out.

Are you using any sort of detent? Paint as small as you mentioned will roll right out of a stock phantom barrel.

Thanks guys. I don't have any detent right now, but I'll be adding some nail polish. I'll clean the body and internals, dab some oil on the hammer, check the cup seal and report back.

I completely missed that you weren't using any type of bore-kit or detent when I read the post... THIS is also a very likely source of your issue. If you're shooting that small of paint through the stock bore, then as Wizbaa says, every few balls you're getting one that is rolling part the way down the barrel before you fire... this will cause significant velocity loss on that shot, when the rest of your shots seem to be grouped relatively tightly.

So between this and the over-lubed internals, I'm sure you've found your solution!

Are you using a stock CCI barrel? No mention of using any sizer or insert system?

Yeah, stock barrel. All my good barrels are cocker threaded. This is my first Phantom and my first modern marker short of an A5 that doesn't have a cocker thread.

Edit: I threw some nail polish in the barrel last night, tried it today and sure enough, stable velocity! Thanks to everyone that chimed in here. I really appreciate the help. I haven't had to deal with roll outs in so long, I didn't even consider it could have been that.
