So when i air up my phantom the pump stroke stinks. Even more than without air. Like if i cock it, even with a return spring i have to pull that thing pretty hard forward. The backstroke is insanely stiff also. What could cause this?

well, when it's aired up the hammer latches to the bolt and your feeling the hammer dragging. that's what it sounds like to me.

is it a brand new gun? if it is, it'll get better as it breaks in.

No, very much used. And when i mean stiff i mean STIFF. After going through 50 rounds im sorelol

You are experiencing "Kink"

If you have the modern "anti kink" hammer (rounded like a football) than you will need to thread your IVG so that more of the tube sticks into the gun to keep the hammer from kinking better.

If you have the older hammer that is just flat on top, than you need the anti kink hammer. that picture is from whitewolfairsmithing.com and the plug for that website is because I stole their picture for this post!

I have a round hammer, but that wasn't the problem. I stuck the cocking rod in the wrong hole *facepalms self*
