I would recommend against a pump as a starter gun. Pumps are great when you're just playing with a few people or when you're playing pumps only, but when you're a new player and you're the only guy there with a pump it can be pretty frustrating.

That's exactly why I decided against giving him the Phantom right now. No need to frustrate him by giving him a handicap off the bat.

In all honesty go with an older cocker. Then if he gets older and goes for speedball/tourny he can get an E-Blade, on the other hand, if he gets more like his uncle(thats you) he can get a pump kit. Also cockers are harder to work on if you don't know about them so there's a draw back; not to mention they might be a bit more excpensive(depends on what year) than your price range. But cockers are fun to upgrade and stuff. So thats just what I think...

Good luck

Tippmann all the way. Best starter gun for any new player. I fix way too many spyder clones every weekend, I never have to fix the 98's that are out there.

IMO, I would get him one of the BT Tippmanns. They shoot great, and can take a real beating. The plus is that they are easier to field strip and work with compared to your average 98c or A5. They can be had pretty cheap to.

I'd say get the 14yr old a VM-68.

They can't break it. They can customize it if they want.
They will build more muscle tone in their arms.
They will be using a marker that is almost older than they are.
In the event of a tornado they will have a paperweight on hand to keep things down.

Oh yeah, they can get one for 40.00!

Good call Scrapiron, the good ol VM.
Whack it with a hammer and it still comes out blazing.
Plus the intimidation factor with the noise might help him with pinning other players down.
