I'm not terribly competitive so that might skew my thoughts on it a little but my guess would be that most just want gear that they think looks cool.

Just guessing but, probably for everyone that looks a those and thinks "Wow that will hide a hit well" there are a dozen thinking "Holy crap thats sweet" or "that would match my gun/jersey/mask awesome"

I can tell you, with absolute certainty, that at least some equipment selection done at the competetive level is done with a consideration of the ability to camoflauge hits. I don't know how universal it is.

It has been around since the dawn of competition.... People look for an edge and some just end up taking it a little "too" far...

I am in the latter of that catagory. I bought one of those crazy pattern hoppers just for one of my craziest looking guns.

I don't know, in the competitive tournaments I've watched/played there is a restricted color for paint. So what's the point of picking a hopper that camouflages for example orange (like the dye rotor in OP's post) when you're not allowed to use it?
