splitting them up evenly is best - or split them off completely if they refuse...

problem with random is sometimes you still stack a team - the explanation is simple - it is more fun when everyone has a fair chance

even splitting them evenly is just a start point - if one team is demolishing the other - shift them around a bit

if the game is close for the most part - leave it be

it's all about the staff also paying attention to ebb and flow - it is OK for a team to get a solid win here or there - but when 2 - 3 games back to back are annhilation events - change it up a bit.

The regulars should be prepared to be split up for walk on games. if they want to all play on the same team they can organize a private event or a team practice

That's the way I look at it, and I have been playing at the same field for 23 years.

I think you did right. Calling them out like that is not popular but it's effective and quite possibly even be more fun for that group that got split up making it more challenging playing against each other and at the end if the day they can share game stories etc

I don't know why you wouldn't want to split up, there is no fun or skill in cherry picking walk-ons.

Good job!

And my field is mostly regulars with a few renters and new guys, so we split the regulars up and split the new guys up. Works out fine.

I kept it pretty even, except that one time I ran 30 renters vs. 2 guys from our house team. (118, they used to come down to the states every so often)

The 2 guys won. Edit-I made them play with rental gear, though,

well, I just pull the smart @ss approach. "ALLRIGHT... it's rentals vs. regulars again!!!"

I once went to the owner of a field after UCONNs team was allowed to play against the walk-ons and the head ref watched them bunker a kid that was there for his 12th birthday and another kid in his party shot himself in the foot just to save himself the humiliation. He promptly moved them to a private practice.

I walked out on the group I was playing with a few weekends ago. Complete blow out games aren't fun for anyone. The ref gave me a stupid answer when I pointed out that the last three games were completely 100% lopsided wins. I spoke with the ownership of the field, but by then I was annoyed enough I simply joined a different group.

Needless to say, this is one of the issues that is impeding our game from growing. No one likes to be on the constantly losing team, and there isn't much fun to be had by winning constantly without any challenge.

Well handled, Diomedes.
