I just picked up a Def Tec standalone single shot 37mm for my department. They are predominantly used for bean bag rounds or OC deployment these days. Owning the launcher by itself does not constitute it as being a destructive device. If you own incendiary, explosive, baton, or shot shells with it, it becomes a destructive device...even if it's not loaded or being used. Owning the shells by themselves is also considered being a destructive device. Citizens may own them after the proper documentation, which includes a $200 tax stamp for EACH round. That's a rather costly day at the range. That's just the federal regulations....some states & localities have tighter regulations, since as a smooth-bore it may fall into their shotgun definition.

The price difference between a 37mm and 40mm tube is astronomical. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, except for absolute purist collectors. The ammo is also a small fortune per round. Even the rather mundane 37mm flares and smoke rounds could run you a few hundred bucks after just a few minutes at the range.

And, if anyone is curious, have a look here....the rather nasty end result of some home fabricated 37mm rounds. I don't care what anyone says...those shells are not designed to be reusable. A member of the former 37mm.com community is now minus a launcher, and a hand:
