Hmm...a mix of both would be awesome. I LOVE my Golf R...its a 2012 6th gen and its fun as hell to drive.

I'm a self admitted VW fanboy....there I said it! I currently have a MK5 GLI so basically the same car as a GTI in a Jetta. The car has a stage 2 Revo CPU flash, 3 inch turbo back exhaust, lowered on Neuspeed springs and Koni dampers. Similar cars dyno at about 275 hp to the wheels and it eats 350z's alive. That being said if I can keep my foot out of it and cruise to work like a normal person I average 30mpg over my 50 mile commute.

TDI's are cool though but and I would really consider getting one especially a six speed manual Sportwagon. VW also came out with a TDI cup edition Jetta that's got the thunder bunny front grill and bumper and a votex body kit if you can find one.

The r's are cool and all but if I wanted a car for performance I would get something else. I drive 90% city so looking for good economy with a little pep. I think tdi will work well. I just want the gti looks.

If you are willing to go outside the VW brand, I really like my Mazda 3 hatchback (2012, not the newer style). The Skyactiv tech gives great mileage (I have exceeded 40 mpg on the highway) and even the automatic is fun (6 spd tranny). It doesn't have much in the way of HP but it is light enough and has a sportier suspension so it is fun as hell to burn around the city in.

I actually test drove one a couple years older and though it wasn't terrible I'm not big on the looks which is important to me if I am going to spend so much money.

I even drove a Ford focus St, and it was a fun car to drive but too girly for me. Pretty much narrowed it down to the golf, just a matter of which one.

Completely understood. You either love or hate the smiley Mazda 3.

I got a 2013 Jetta TDI with 0% financing for 6 years and a warrantee for the life of the loan. Im getting 48mpg @65mph, 45mpg @85mph 46mpg around town. It pays me to drive it.

The bad: Suspension is marshmallow soft. No way of turning the Traction control off. Snow performance is garbage on stock tires with the crap suspension and lack of TCS off button. (Low rolling resistance tires do everything poorly)

In the 20k miles I have put on the car has been trouble free.

-I put in and wired my own OEM TCS button

-Winter/Summer tires and wheels.

-Coilovers fixed suspension issues.
