They told me the reason they sided with him is because it was the first and only complaint brought up against them.
Even had they sided with you they have zero authority to actually do anything. Many businesses pay dues to them in order to be members which means they will, in the absence of overwhelming reason not to, side with the business.

I mean the salesguy was a bit of an ***. But the fault does lie on your mom. My mom never purchases into electronics after about a month of research, reviews, calling around, talking to various reps at different places. So your mom was trying to buy something she had no knowledge on and made the mistake of buying stuff she didn't need. I heard the best analogy for this. People think salesmen are like doctors watching out for our best interests and telling when we should really be cutting back on meat, while salemen are actually butchers they are trying to sell you the meat. They will always tell you that its good meat and try to sell you on it. A butcher won't tell you, hey you are starting to pick up some weight maybe cut back on the meat. So I mean honestly the fault relies entirely on your mom, she swiped the card, she signed the contract, and she bought it. It not Verizon's fault she chose to be a misinformed buyer. She never had to buy anything on the spot. She could have gone home and done some research. There was no rush to buy it.

That's because eating meat does not equal gaining weight.

My butcher asks what I'm looking for, and makes helpful suggestions. That's why I pay more to go to him than picking something up in the supermarket.

But his end goal is to sell you meat and make suggestions on what meat may be or what you may like. Not to watch out for your well being.

And a terrible one.

The goal of all three are to keep you happy. The doctor that keeps making patients mad by offering medicines and advise they did not want isn't going to have any patients. Likewise the butcher and salesman that sell you things that doesn't make you happy aren't going to be selling things for long.

I have a doctor acquaintance. His mother despises him because she thinks that he does not treat her properly and won't give her medication she says she needs, while other people he treats get a lot of meds. Speaking with him, he says that most patients just want a quick fix, they don't care about how potentially bad the drugs can be. So he can either prescribe drugs to keep them happy. Or have them go somewhere else where they might get overmedicated and be far worse in the long run. He told me that he can't and won't prescribe his own family meds just to keep them happy and he knows his mother won't go to other doctors.

Final update to the story:
I had my mother-in-law cancel the Hotspot, and she paid the early termination fee. She hopefully learned to check with me before getting any new tech device.

Thanks for everyone's input!
