Incorrect. Stews contain vegetables and meats including, but no limited to, beef. They have a much more gravy like consistency and often are created with a roux base using the fat of the meat that was cooked for the stew.

Devil - I lived in Texas for a bit so I know what's up

Ya I learned to make Chili while I was stationed in TX. If you even thought about adding beans there you were taking your life into your hands.

However when I moved back up north people look at you like you have a third eye if you DON'T put beans in Chili.

Personally I like it either way but I do favor beanless Chili. Though they are not even close to being the same dish.

For the same reason we think we're the experts on steaks, BBQ, hamburgers, and so many other things... because we ARE.

Right! Without beans it's chili. With beans it's Silly Yankee Soup.

No... Chili on top of Spaghetti is Silly Yankee Soup.

"TEXICANS" think they are experts on everything. I may, however, grant them some limited knowledge of Chili - being from Texas, their knowledge on anything is (at best) limited.

Bar-b-que, however, is more of a South-Eastern thing. Wanna start another great thread - ask what kind of sauce is "true" bar-b-queue sauce.

Any real chili-lover would slap the taste outta yer mouth for using the word "roux" in a sentence.

I am loving this discussion. It's great when we can all share our preferences for pages without it becoming an all out screaming match!

...and for someone who uses the word roux I sure have a few more Chili contest 1st places than you would expect

Same recipe each time... NO BEANS

There's a time and place for tofu... Chili is not one of them.
