| Removing the Smoke Smell? Hey All, I'm moving to a new apartment in a few days and it turns out the previous occupant was a smoker. Anyone have anyone have any tips for removing the smell from the walls, carpets, and basically everywhere? (Not anything against smokers, I just don't want to live with that smell and I sure don't want my PB gear to smell like the room does.) Thanks. |

| Seasoned Member | What kind of smoke? I'm assuming cigarette, but not sure. For cigarette smoke, make sure you get the carpet thoroughly washed and then vacuumed with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner. If the smell is still there, then I'd just suggest keeping the place well-ventillated and use air cleaners like those along the lines of the ionic breeze. And then let time do its thing.

| In my old college apartment we threw loads of that carpet freshener powder all over the place, let that sit for a bit and then vacuumed it up. Airing it out for a week or so helped.

| As much as I hate to cause problems with it, I have to agree. If you weren't told they smoke or they weren't supposed to, request aother empty apartment or make management clean it. Besides, if they weren't supposed to, it'll come out of their deposit.

| Lord humungus the Mod | A full blown cleaning will rid it. You can test how bad it is by taking a bleach rag to one of the walls. I would clean all the walls and use some of that carpet powder. -Jake

| at my dads trim shop (auto interiors) we use a machine (about the size of a large desktop PC) that we place inside of cars and seal the doors and leave it in there over night to get rid of smoke and other bad smells. it works well. i think it's some sort of ionizer type machine... i'll get some more details when i see my dad. |
