you said you were not going to get subs so you won't even need an amp to power them.

Depending on how much power he wants to put to the speakers. Amp's are not just for subs.

Crutchfield is good, but expensive. You can get good prices at sites like sonicelectronix.com, etronics.com, woofersetc.com etc.

If you have a PBN account, just post up here: ST:A Official Car Audio Thread V.13: We measure our bass with the Richter Scale - PbNation
If you are polite and willing to learn a little they are usually willing to help.

if your just replacing the deck,
any after market deck will do the job.
you will need a wiring harness adapter and sometimes a mounting plate but if your just replacing the deck that's about all you need.
the wiring harness will have the plug end that is compatible with your new deck and the mass of colored wires the installer will need to connect to the existing wiring.
an amp is un-necessary for your mid to top end if your deck has on board high power as most do presently.
sound from around 500hz to 22000hz (the top of human hearing) requires less of your amplifiers than the big 250hz down to theoretical 0hz slam of Disturbed's bass drums.

buy the deck that has the features you want in the price range that you are comfortable with.
do not let the sales person "sell you" something more expensive just because it has pretty lights or some other gimmic.

as for the deck's quality,
the brands spoken of here are all reasonable.
in fact everything you find at Best Buy, Future Shop and 75% of the audio shops is
Mid-Line product that has a range of cheap stuff for the work truck to almost high end equipment for the audiophile on a budget.
just beware of the over hyped funky looking bling product that is targeted at the kids that are
trying to shove a rock concert into their mom's hatch back so they can compensate in front of all the little high school tarts before the high school dance starts.

remember Pyramids belong in Egypt not in your car.
