Trying to stay on track. All paid off again, barely used... Another month in.

I have poor spending habits, and I've relatively recently realized I'd have been MUCH better off with a debit card. I may have still had those bad habits, but I couldn't use a line of credit to subsidize it.

The only good thing is right now (save the credit card) I have no bills and now have a full time job, so getting the thing paid off shouldn't take more than a year to a year and a half.

Then I can buy myself a car...

Another month, back to 0 balance. Only using it for specific purchases. I'm on a roll and have no urge to use it otherwise.

agreed there Carter. Once I got mine all the way paid off I find I only use it if I have the cash to pay for the purchase in the bank and the CC gives me some extra benefit say for example extending my warranty when I bought my flatscreen TV. Then once i've paid for it with the CC I just transfer the money out of my bank account directly to the CC so it's like I paid for it with my bank account but got the benefits of the CC. That's personally I find the smartest way to use credit.

Well... We'll see what happens this coming month. Had to purchase plane tickets to Florida for April vacation. I used my card due to the points. Saved $500 because of points and we had a $200 voucher for a delayed flight my wife was on for work.

So our round trip cost will be about $800 in the end. This month will be paid off, and I will scrounge up enough to pay off next months as well even with the extra for the plane tickets.... Hopefully.

I mean, I know I can but I've been really trying to put the money towards paying off our mortgage. I have a long term / 5 year plan I'm really aiming for right now, and don't want to fall off track.

RE paying off the mortgage, is your strategy to just make enlarged monthly payments to pay it off a few years early, or are you intending to just hit it with one big payment from savings?

I've been carrying on an internal debate about paying off the mortgage lately, but I think it might make sense to just continue building my cash reserve and just buy a better house. Then either sell my current one or use it as a rental.

Yeah, that's a whole different debate than what I have going on. If you plan on renting your current house, save up your cash for a good down payment.

I plan on staying where I am and by paying a large extra every month for the next 5 years (which is hard, but feasible) we can have the house paid off, and I will save $200K in the overall mortgage in interest. That's a lot of money to not give away. I'd rather forgo some "fun" now to have that money in my pocket down the road to have some serious fun later.

I can now say that I've officially joined the zero'd out credit card club. Now, to pick another bill and work on that one. Getting there, slowly but surely.
