@Pickle - I'm located in California, in actual comp I have only use a modified blazer (thats what I got my single kill with) and another gun that I'm not sure what it was. Loved the blazer, very accurate.

I will have to check out those JT masks, I'm just a bit turned off by that name now that I used one of their cheaper masks and was felt very constricted compared to trying other peoples masks and seeing how wide of FOV they had, as well as comfort.

@El Gringo - Right, converting an autococker to a pump is the way I want to go. However since I cant afford or justify a Palmer (yet) Do you or anyone else have a recommendation on a good solid frame to start from?

@sdawg - Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out and see what I can learn. The field I played at has free all day speedball pump every month with free Co2 & Air. Seems like it will be a blast.

Thanks for all the info so far, keep it coming!

I've been thinking about getting a new mask, and I tried on a bunch of them at my local pro-shop. The most comfortable one by far was the Dye I3 Pro. However, I think it makes me look I just landed from Mars. Also, it rings up at ~$100.

P.S. What field is this?

You can get a decent pump gun for 150 dollars and under.

You can get a decent mechanical autococker for 250 dollars or so, and thats a very nice one

You can get a decent mechanical blazer for 400 dollars or so

You can get a decent electro for 300-500 dollars, many for around 400

You should not start with a decent electro because you will look more like a newbie than ever.

Id say start with an automag.

100 dollars.

Buy a good compressed air tank from the get go, probably a 45/45 because you dont want the extra weight <the mag will be a bit hefty> The shoot strait though, but pretty slow, and wont give you problems unless minor ones but probably none at all if you oil it well.

thats 130 dollars or so

Automag will come with a decent barrel, use that. Empire reloader 2 (agitated, works well) probably 30 bucks.

260 for your setup, plus the mask which id suggest being a JT flex 7 or spectra, they are more comfortable and weigh less than other masks.

So a 300 dollar buy in.

Down the line, you can dump your automag for the price you payed for it, and lose no money whatsoever in the change from your old but good mechanical gun, to your newer electro, or you may choose to go towards pump, and the overwhelmingly most popular choice these days is a low pressure autococker based pump, which is better off with your 45/45 HPA tank anyways.

Either that or get a direct feed phantom with a bottomline and use it with a 9 oz or 12 oz co2 tank and a cheap 200 round loader, will cost some over 200 dollars plus your mask and youl be shooting a great pump gun.

I actually just went ahead and ordered that mask, I was looking at it before you posted. Its expensive sure, but for something that you are wearing as protection and something that needs to be comfortable and hinder your vision as little as possible I think its worth it. I will build up to being able to play one part at a time for now so $100 for just a mask this paycheck isn't so bad. Also, considering I will just playing just pump for now, thats a bit cheaper overall so I will save a bit in that department. (help me justify this here )

The field is a non commercial field in Sacramento, but open for anyone that wants to play on the last Sunday of each month. I'm not sure on the name or anything. Its a nice field though, lots of cover and some interesting bunkers.

So can anyone throw out some names of some good Mechanical Autocockers that can be converted to Pump?

I want to stay away from the plastic guns, I would prefer to spend a bit more on a quality piece. I know there are some great older guns that can be picked up for cheap that used to be expensive, but I don't know brands/models or anything.

Thanks for the help.

I started and help run a website for California players. It started as a scenario site for just CA but is expanding. Asshats aren't allowed on the forum and everyone is very helpful. We don't have a large number of people from Nor Cal on it but there are a few and I am sure they would be very willing to help you. Many of us will be in Fresno next month too.

If you don't want to bother converting an autococker you can buy a brand new WGP Outkast bodied Sniper 2 for like $145 shipped on ebay right now. Just a thought. Oh yeah and welcome to the sport and MCB.

Well, I decided to just go with a pump. So I bought a Phantom from Dewok82 here in the forums. Hopefully it will serve me well, I do have some questions about that gun. Not sure if I should start a new topic or not.

Can you change the grip on them? The one I bought has the M16 style grip, I personally prefer 45 grips. If I cant change it, its not a big deal...

Yup,Phantoms grips are the traditional Lonestar mount so,basically you have a choice of almost any style grip you can imagine.CCI makes a .45 block that is designed specifically for the Phantom, personally I find them a bit too thin.

If you want to try a very comfy grip for the Phantom check out the 86 Degree one from CCM Chipley Machine: Phantom 86 degree frame

Also one of the best places to get Phantom parts is Stock Class and Pump Paintball Headquarters - Wevo Paintball

Personally, the best place to get Phantom parts is from CCI, the maker of the Phantom. Call and talk to Mike and get the parts from the guy that makes the gun. http://www.phantomonline.com/index.html

Phantoms are great little pumps, I have two and love them. Pretty low on the maintenance scale and they are great shooters. They also allow you to set them up just about however you could ever want to.

I agree with Cuhna on the AutoMag for a great first-timer mechanical semi. You can really buy the classic and old style power-feed Mags for a great price these days. Rock solid and they are great shooters. The kiddies will ask you all day what sort of Shocker you have.

Oh yeah, welcome to paintball and MCB, as the others said.
