He isn't even pleading guilty on that charge, but instead he's pleading guilty to the felony conspiracy charge. He was running an illegal business across state lines, was not paying taxes on the profits, was gambling which is illegal in most of the states it was happening at, ... etc. It's not that he just killed a dog or two, he's done a bunch of crap. I know some who have said "dog fighting isn't that big of a deal, I dont' understand... ". Well, over the past few years there have been several circumstances that brought this to life. one was when a young boy walked into the wrong yard with a pit-bull which had been trained to be vicious for fighting purposes and the kid was ripped to shreds. In another incident, one of the dogs from a dog-fighting ring got loose and killed 2 kids I believe, and injured another. There is a reason why that sport is illegal, as it's not only cruel to the animals but very dangerous if they get loose. There's been several incidents where the owners running these fighting training camps have gotten mauled / killed by their own dogs. As a dog owner, I really cannot stand dog fighting. It makes people afraid of dogs, which is bad. I have a siberian husky, who is about 50 pounds soaking wet, who is the most gentle & playful dog you would have ever met, around kids or adults. The husky species is a breed of dog known to not attack humans, and actually they try to become a part of your "pack". My husky in particular is the biggest wimp you'll ever meet. Very submissive and doesn't mind being the lowest member of the chain. Yet people are afraid of him because they say he "looks like a wolf" or because "dogs are viscious". It just sucks that because of a few bad apples people don't get to enjoy these animals. As for whoever said community service at a dog pound, that's the last place I would want him is around other dogs. On top of that, his federal charges are enough, that if he doesn't plea and they do file another set of charges (like they are scheduled to by the end of the week), he's looking at a LOT of time behind bars. Right now the prosecuters are recommending 12-18 months to the judge, but the judge gets the final say and can go up to 5 years if he chooses. Most likely he'll get the 12-18 months, and have to serve somewhere between 50 and 75% of that time because of "time off for good behavior". I think that's the very least they should do. He is being smart by taking this plea deal because if he goes to trial all details of this investigation will go public, and he will be ruined. As it stands right now, he's only pleading guilty to that consipiracy charge for a reason, because if he is found guilty of any of the gambling charges it is almost a definite that he would be banned from the NFL for life due to their long-standing policy against gambling. This plea deal MIGHT actually allow him to play in the NFL again, but it probably would not be for a few years. My own speculation is that he is going to spend about a half a year or so in jail, and the NFL is probably going to put him on a suspension from playing for a few years, plus add on a fine and some community service to try to get some positive PR on this. But most likely he'll play again, which is what he was concerned with from the beginning. I lived in Newport News (aka "bad news") most of my life, and currently live about an hour from there. I was in school at the same time as him and heard all sorts of stories about him and about Iverson. Vick was smarter, he kept his stuff swept under the rug and kept a clean image. His little brother was too ignorant to follow that example. I think he's an amazing ball player, and I hope he can rebound from this and change his life. But I do hope they don't go easy on him, otherwise he won't learn anything from this. Just my 2 cents. |

I'm reminded of the movie Blazing Saddles, where "Mongo" (played by Alex Karras, who played with the Detroit Lions until he was sacked for illegal gambling) walks up to a horse in the street, and punches it in the face, knocking it unconcious. I think Karras was a pro-wrestler after football (the superfly days).

I am disappointed in the NFL. Gambling is so bad that it warrants a lifetime ban, however drug dealing, shooting people and domestic violence are okay? Dog fighting is bad, horrible, inhumane, digusting...pick your own word here. But it is not worse than hitting your wife or many of the other things that NFL players have done over the years. I didn't hear a war cry against those players calling for their jobs.

Yes, he was stupid to jeopardize his career, but we don't know the reasons behind it. We assume that sports stars aren't actually people with regular abnormalities that can inflict us all (seeking the acceptance of family/ friends, bad judgment, tempers) I feel sorry for him because he has done something extremely stupid but because of his celebrity, it became international news. I guarantee that if he was not affiliated with this case nobody outside of VA would have heard of this. As for the stance on gambling, I believe the thought is that of the offenses mentioned, it is the only one that translates back in a way that could effect the outcome of a game. If someone gambles, they may be tempted to fix a game (at least that's the thought process as far as I can tell.) | |
