Question Switch stem piece not on diagram?

While changing the o-rings on the switch stem of my Blazer I managed to take out a piece that's not on the Blazer diagram. It's a piece of brass that goes around the switch stem, on the end going into the Blazer. It was mangled when I took it out and now it's not going back in.

I put everything back together, except for that part, and it seems to work fine. Does anyone know what that piece is for? Maybe so the switch stem doesn't back in....
Is it harmful to not have it in there?

Anyone? Just a thin brass ring. My blazer seems to be shooting a lot better now that its not in there anymore, hopefully it won't ruin it. I may have to call PPS if no one knows.
