I used to do that, but if you keep it in it's original format you have the option of using a better raw converter in the future.

When Lightroom went from version 1 to version 2, they improved the process for reading and processing .NEF files. I had converted a lot to DNG and wasn't able to take advantage of that. Same thing happens with software suites like Capture 1 Pro and other.

This is a good reason to save your originals when you do a conversion. Lightroom has this ability and gives you the forward compatibility of a DNG while retaining your original NEF file.
