cisco shuts down the flip camcorder

Bye, Flip. We'll Miss You

this just boggles my mind. while i don't think the flip is the best pocket camcorder (i like the zi8 more), i do think the flip is the leader in the market. why would you cut off your product line while it's at the top?

and i see people saying phones can do the same thing as a flip, well i'm not going to go backpacking and dangle my phone over a raging river that i just hiked past at a mountain top. sometimes a dedicated device is better, and a lot of those times a pocket camcorder is a good thing.

Yea I've been quite pleased with my UltraHD besides its charging issues (often stops because it's "too hot" and won't resume for several hours). Doesn't matter if I just use AA's in it, or if I'm just patient enough to wait for it to actually charge. Takes quite good video for a pocket camcorder IMO, compact, and feels sturdy enough that I'm not afraid to take it around with me.

Cisco got really really drunk one night and decided to get in on this crazy new internet video YouTube business.

As of this week Cisco sobered up and remembered it's a networking company and had more important things to do, like make commercials involving extremely optimistic videoconferencing performance and Ellen Page.

mmm ellen page...

i like the flip, but i dont like the fact that it only has a 2x zoom on it (which i believe is digital). plus the sony bloggie touch is in the same price range but is much nicer.

I prefer the GoPro, but whatever. I've used the Flip on a few occasions, but I never really liked it.

I never understood the concept.

If I wanted a pocket digital video recorder with high resolution and hours and hours worth of storage...I'd get a smartphone/iTouch/soon-to-be-any-ipod. Oh wait, already got one.

Except these started before smart phones/ipods/high tech multi-tasking gizmos had a high resolution digital video recorder that worked as well as the dedicated cameras/recorders, and many still don't have all the features that are available in multi-tasking products. As well as the fact that many people, like mentioned above, don't want to risk their much more important multi-tasking products in situations where you would be ok losing a product that only films and records. Many of the multi-tasking products also don't have the same memory capacity (pictures, music, other important files, etc) as dedicated cameras and recorders, and aren't as effective. A broken camera is a lot easier to deal with than a broken iphone/ipod/thing I do everything else with.

TLDR: You should try reading the article and some of the posts above you, then you could see why someone might want these.

As someone with a Sony Bloggie Touch, I say that there were better recorders (though I admit, not as easy to upload, which is what Flips were good at).
