I shoot Nikon and have owned a few higher end Sigma lenses in the past. Sigma has GREAT customer service and they stand behind their products. Sigma has been known to offer free "re-chipping" of their lenses in the event that they no longer are compatible with new bodies.

I had an older low end Sigma 70-300 that I got back when I had a film Rebel. After that I upgraded to the first gen digital Rebel, and the lens worked fine with that too. A couple years back I upgraded to the Rebel T1i, and the lens stopped working unless the aperture was set to wide open. Any other aperture or automatic setting and the camera would generate an error requiring a restart.
While I was aware that Sigma was doing the re-chipping, I decided to trade the lens and get something newer instead.

only down side is it weighs five freakin pounds, but i man up and lug it around for a workout and great shots.

Well, I broke down and just ordered a canon 10-22. I really, really liked the idea of the 8-16 sigma, and I know I am going to spend a lot of time second guessing myself on this. In the end, concern about having to rechip wasn't a factor. I realized at my skill level and the type of pictures I take that the extreme low end was as likely to get me in trouble as it was to accomplish all I wanted. Also, having only a T1i, not having focus microadjustment made the likely hood of not getting an acceptable lens a lot larger; and not being able to try one out at a local store, I decided to chicken out and stick with the canon. When I upgrade camera's in a couple of years, hopefully with a little better skill to back it up, I will be seriously reconsidering the 8-16. Now I am excited about it as show season starts up again.

Wolf: You will be more than happy with the 10-22. Wide and ultra wide lenses are the most interesting thing to play with I swear. It's a big wide world out there

Have you consider renting the bigger lens instead of buying? I rent them for the occasional shoot.

a local place sometimes has the sigma 70-200 in stock so I might have a chance to try and buy there. If not, i will probably try a lens rental out. I am pushing it back though for a while anyway, but I see there is a rumor the canon 100-400L is going to be replaced. That has me interested now, because 400mm would be REALLY nice for wildlife. It might be way to far out of my price range though, even used/refurb, but I'd like to see what they come out with.
