2.1 speaker suggestions

Currently the wife and I are using an old set of 2.1 computer speakers as our stereo system. We hook up our iPods and computer to the line in when we want to listen to music or stream video. I currently have a Bluetooth reciever on the way as well to make this solution wireless. We are not huge audiophiles, but we do like the level of sound quality offered with the inclusion of a subwoofer.

These speakers are OLD though. They came with my family's first home computer we bought back in 95 or so on our 100 MHz 512 mb ram computer, if you turn up the bass too much there is definite crackling.

So I'm looking to replace and looking for suggestions on some high quality speakers. By quality I'm more looking for durability rather than sound quality. As stated above, the addition of a sub alone is enough for me, I'm looking more for computer speakers that will last another close to 20 years. Multiple input jacks is preferable, but not required.

As usual, I'm a cheap bastard, so suggestions below $100 are preferable, but I'm willing to pay for something that will last.

Thanks!

I've got a set of Altec Lansing 2.1's I paid a couple hundred for, sounds amazing. I know on amazon you can get Altec Lansing 2.1's for around $50-60.

I would have suggested the classic Klipsch Promedia 2.1s, but it seems the quality of these have fallen and the control plug connector fails. It's a pity, since the set I have connected to my computer, I have been abusing for over 12 years and they still rock.

Yeah I miss my old set of klipsch's. I had the plug problem on three different sets before I finally gave up and got my money back.

I used a Boston Acoustics 2.1 (BA735 IIRC) system for over ten years and enjoyed my music a swell as watching movies and tv on my desktop.

If you want to increase your budget, check out Peachtree Audio equipment. They make integrated amps with DACs. They also make speakers (formerly known as Era Design) and compact systems. New, they are expensive compared to your budget, but they can be found used. I'm running a Peachtree Audcio Decco amp to a pair of NHT Absolue Zero speakers in my office. I also usea Peachtree Audio Nova and Era Design 5 speakers in my living room. No subs in either room and I'm very happy with the low end.

I have a set of Klipsch speakers that work wonderfully. I have only had them for a few months and I got them used. When I got them the bass had been blown out and I replaced the cone. They sound amazing.

What is the plug issue everyone is having?

Would a pair of speakers with onboard subwoofers and an external amplifier be outside your price range?

I don't know, depends if I like them lol

If people could throw up some links I would appreciate it, I did some looking at best buy today before I started my training shift and needless to say I was not impressed based on construction alone, didn't get a chance to test them though so iMac be making a snap judgement.

One issue that you are going to get with a 2.1 combination is that the woofers in the speakers themselves won't be powerful enough to deliver the mid-range. You will get the subwoofer trying to push out the middle frequencies, which doesn't provide very good or accurate sound.

But as you said, sound quality to you is second. I just got a used Logitech Z-2300 from a friend of mine as a freebie:

Amazon.com: Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer: Electronics

It seems to be looked at in high regard compared to other 2.1 systems, but you are stuck buying NOS on eBay or Amazon.
