Unable to play .AVI files in Windows Media Center 12

Anyone else experiencing this? I tried locating a CODEC pack, and it installed a browser hijack, so I removed the entire thing, fixed my PC and now I still can't play .AVI files via Windows Media Center. (The reason I need it to work is because I have files on my PC that I stream through my XBox.)

Here is the error I get when I try to play any .AVI file (Media Center and Media Player both crash when I try to play the files)

You can use something like gspot and it will tell you what codecs you need.

Gspot looks like it was discontinued in 2007... Is it still viable?

Ugh... I think more than just a couple codecs got compromised. Looks like some core player files are messed up. Might try and reinstall media player.

Newer codecs have been released but detecting the ones needed should still be about the same. It's definitely obsolete so not sure. They did use that functionality in GOM player as well so maybe that's the newer project. GOM definitely has a codec finder built in as well.

Been a while since I used a utility. I just use VLC for stuff wmplayer can't identify.

Already tried to un/re-install WMP. Still no luck. For the time being, I'll just use VLC to watch on my PC and find another way to stream to my TV through that. Thanks for the help MaD.
