Picked up an Ion, powers up, gasses us, pops instead of fires

Ok so I'm a little lost as to what could be wrong here, hoping for some insight.

Picked up an Ion today for $50, couldn't pass on the deal. Get it home, gas it up, the reg shows 130-150 pounds, gun powers up just fine, solenoid seems to working, but when it fires, it makes a popping sound and the bolt doesn't move. Broke it down, made sure the bolt was lubed up properly, reassembled, still only pops instead fires.

When I first gas it up with the bolt in the backwards (open) position, it hisses and then closes in the forward position. When I take the tank off, it'll pop for several shots as the pressure drops, then at around 100psi, it shoots all the remaining pressure out of the tank input.

Any ideas where to look for the issue, or what to start replacing?

sounds like your dwell isn't high enough. I forget how to adjust the dwell on a stock ion board, but you can find that info easily enough.

It might seem absurd, but check to make sure that the solenoid armature is installed correctly.

ZDS has a pretty good how to:

Tried this, turned the dwell up considerably to no avail. My only other thought at this moment is possibly the 9V is dying. I've got an Epiphany here as well, so I'm going to start swapping parts in one at a time and see if i can't figure out whats happening.

yup - that's what they do when they need more voltage.

checking this first on any electro that isn't working right will save you a lot of headaches.

The orings on the bolt can wear out or harden, causing these kinds of problems.

When you've got the new battery in there, and swapped the o-rings for good measure, set the dwell back to stock, or to whatever dwell is appropriate for the internal upgrades you may have (qev, bolt).
