Nope, factory.

It was a gilled M98, right? I think they are the only ones with metal power tubes, maybe some of the early customs.

Yeah, my Model 98 (gilled, pre-custom) has a metal powertube and cap as well.
Both of my M98 Customs have plastic...

Correct, old "grilled" m98s had them, I think some earlier models of the customs had them to, JCS makes aftermarket ones as well

Tippmann switched to the plastic Power tube and plastic end cap for performance reasons.
The plastic end cap absorbs the hammer better. especially when he rubber bumper decayed. they also switched to the grey o-ring because it lasts longer.
with no bumper the early 98 use to break the 2 halves of the body where it holds the end cap.
The metal power tubes were switched because the plastic is better. it flexes better with temperature changes and doesn't dent like the metal.

Its funny, the metal power tube is the first thing Tippmann improved, yet everyone feels they need to change it back. Tippmann doesn't make changes to the working of the gun to be cheap, there is generally an improvement involved.

Well, metal powetubes work better if you're setting the gun up to run on liquid. But otherwise yeah it's a waste.

Saving a couple pennies on every gun is the only reason I can think of for Tippmann to switch sear and spring designs.
